Gears & Tires: What are you running and how satisfied are you?

Running 4.88 gears on a 2012 Tacoma 4WD 6SPD 4.0 S/C with 36.5" diameter (actual diameter) tires.

I'd say I'm pretty satisfied with it... but I'm never at the speeds (50+ mph) you guys are often at.

I have 285/70/17 on my FJ with stock gearing. Takes a little more gas to accelerate, but after a few weeks I've gotten use to it. Cruise control seems to "gun" it more on freeway grades than before. Offroad the more aggressive tread and larger size have helped out to get a tire up over things.

I have 34" tires and 4.56 gears in my FJC and like this combo. Before I re-geared the diffs, the cruise control drove me crazy and was nearly useless. Now it works again, and acceleration from a standing start is good again, like stock.

285/75 16's (measure out right at 33") on my 4runner, swapped to 4.3 gears out of a limited. Its a 5 speed and supercharged and I'm VERY happy with the set up. Cruises fine, and accellerates very well on all the mountain passes around CO. 19 or so on the hwy is about as good as the mileage gets so far.

Do you have a 4 cyl or V6? How's your fuel economy with that setup?

I've been holding off on bigger tires because I know with my 2.7 it won't drive well unless the gears are matched right. I don't want to head that direction until I can afford to do it right.

It has the 3.4 liter V6 and auto transmission. My mileage is NOT great. I get about 16 or 17 on the Highway at he best and when we are pulling our face painting trailer it goes down to between 10 and 13. Keep in mind that I have the Marlin Crawler dual transfer cases, a Flip-pac and quite a bit of heavy skid plates, bumpers and sliders. I keep meaning to weigh it but haven't done so just yet. When it was stock My best freeway mileage was 23.

4.30's with 265/75/16's (31.8"), 5spd 3rz reg cab. Decent setup, needs a bit more pep on the highway, but I don't push it over 65mph too often
Gets 21mpg on work commute (city) and 26mpg on highway at 65-70mph.
Probably going to 255/85/16's (33.3") soon and will most likely regear to 4.88s or 5.29's

Yeah I'd imagine 4.88s would be much friendlier on the highway than the 5.29s. I haven't done the math yet, so I just went off the top of my head.

When I "did the math" I went from 4.10s with 265/70-16s to 33x10.50-15s. The math suggested 4.34 gear ratio. I went with 4.88s instead of 4.56s because we pull a trailer and the truck weighs more that a bunch. 65 mph indicated on the speedometer is an actual 55mph on the GPS.
