Gen 2.5 unicorn?

Gen 2.5 seem hard to find in general let alone a winter package one. Is there an easy way to tell if its a winter package if an add doesn't call it out?

look for a large orange sticker on the driver side of the center console, where your right leg would be if you were driving. Also a small switch next to the cigarette lighter in front of the 4x4 shifter.

I'm no expert but I sure do enjoy searching for my next Montero. I could be wrong but I look for the following:
1. The orange sticker on the side of the center console.
2. The locker switch by the cigarette lighter under the radio.
I'm always using searchtempest to go through all of the craigslist ads.

Best to you.

It is my understanding that headlight washers and heated leather seats were also part of the "winter" package Gen 2.5. You may want to ask about those in the event the PO/salesperson doesn't know about the rear locker (or if the orange sticker was removed).

So...I've been looking for a cheap winter car and I think I may have stumbled onto a '98 with the Winter Package. It's got the orange sticker, switch next to the lighter, and headlight washers.

Should I just go ahead and buy the thing? ;)

How many miles on it? Good maintenance records? Much rust? Any accidents or paintwork? Any modifications? Good price?

Find one that meets your criteria on the above items, and go for it. Good luck!

It's at a dealer so I don't have too much detailed info yet. It's got 169k miles on it and they're asking $2900. I'm assuming that it's probably going to need a timing belt job unless they have detailed maintenance records, but I'm not really expecting them to have that information. I emailed them asking for more info but haven't heard back yet.

Also, I have a question about the rear diff. I know it's a locker, but when not locked is it an open diff or LSD?

which dealer? any on-line photos? When unlocked, acts like an open diff.

Here's the for-sale listing... http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=357873017

I called them yesterday and tried to get info about it. They didn't really know much, it's some random used car lot on the south side of Chicago.

The most they could tell me is it's got a few surface rust spots and 4 mismatched tires. They had no idea on maintenance history.

I think if I talked em down to a lower price since I'd probably need to do a timing belt job and get new tires, it still might be worth it. But definitely needs some money spent on it in addition to the purchase price.

I hope you went for it! I have the same model, got it with 150k on it and paid almost $4k and I thought I got a steal! It needed a head gasket and valve seal replacement as well as a new timing belt and other misc. maintenance. Had a local mechanic do it all for $1700. All told, I'm in about $6700 and wouldnt trade her for anything!

Good Luck!

Same here. I paid a little under $4000 for it with 160k. I just recently had a local shop here in Seattle to do all head gasket set + other gaskets/seals mentioned in another thread, timing belt+water pump, spark plugs, head surfaced and cleaned, all acc belts + an oil change for $1600. I bought all the parts for it around $360. No more smoke and possibly more gas mileage from the 15mpg I've been getting.

I bought my 98 at a bargain, but after explaining to the seller about all of the little things it needed in addition to the timing belt service he agreed.

I had a line on a local 98 with 180k, but a one owner and had all maintenance records including timing replacement. He was asking $3500. I had cash in hand and the trailer hooked up but my little girl had to stay home sick so I had to move my time to meet him to later in the day. 30 mins before we are to meet he texts me to tell me his brother wants it and it was no longer for sale :(. Moral of the story. When you find one, be ready to buy it.

I test drive it on a tues, waited till thurs for him to get one piece of info and was gonna buy on Friday. Should've handed him cash on Tuesday and take it home.
