I guess everyone on here has a sense of adventure and it is cool to read through all the work that people have put into their machines, but I still think that old diesel engines are second rate compared to petrol. But the grass is always greener on the other side, mine is diesel and i'd do anything to have a petrol engine! Mine took a pretty big hit to the power when I bust the injector pump and had to get it rebuilt,it was rebuilt to factory spec and I lost a heap of power, and I don't want to go tinkering with it yet because it would void any bit of a guarantee it had. Though my friend gave me a pretty interesting idea of putting a VNT from a BMW into it. He did the same to his land rover and the difference it made was awesome, power from 1100RPM up.
I'd say at a guess mine gets between 21 and 24 USMPG in day to day driving,I got about 26 once driving up the country in a convoy at about 45MPH (because of overheating land rovers),and 2 days of offloading, that was with 4 heavy tyres on rims, and a fair bit of camping gear. it's the cruising at higher speeds kills the economy, though driving at lower speeds kills your sanity. I'm not sure how much better than the petrol engines that is,but then there is all the regional laws that are in the states about emissions and whatnot
I've had a poke around the Hyundai version of the 4d56 in a galloper,it looks pretty much identical, but the pump looks different,so it probably would be a bit more powerful,it can probably push out higher pressure than the old one in the pajeros,so i'd guess the injectors are a higher pop pressure too. He had 00 L200 before it and says the Galloper came onto boost with a bit more of a kick, but had fairly similar gearing to the L200,doing 60 at about 3000RPM. What I found the strangest was the way everything was moved around because it was a LHD, it seemed weird. Wouldn't have minded driving it to see the difference between the engines
