Gen 3 Cooper at 3 tires

Toasty

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
On the Coopers I saw them in action first hand, horrible tires. I know someone did a review about how awesome they are but I'm pretty sure that person got some kickbacks for that article. They got the nickname "pretend tires" out on the trail, they lasted ONE TRIP. I wouldn't buy them with your money.

Road noise is going to be a personal opinion, some people will tolerate more noise than others. Tires that I have used personally I can tell you that the Toyo A/T is louder than the Toyo M/T, I bought brand new 2 sets of Toyo 35's and put the A/T's on my wife Montero and the M/T's on mine. Very surprised about the noise but both sets took barely any weight to balance and served us well. I highly recommend a Toyo because they run true and are very strong (although heavy)

As far as inexpensive tires go I really like the Geolanders, they are light, quiet, true and actually take a decent beating for such a light tire. Plus they are super cheap and they came stock so how can you go wrong.

Back on the coopers, put them in the pile with the procomps and walk away. The new BFG A/T has proven itself to be a solid tire, haven't run the new ones but my old ones were pretty OK. The new KO2's took on the gnarliest trails and shrugged it off 2 years in a row so I'd say they can do the job. The coopers didn't like being offroad at all, sorry if you guys bought them but if you're happy that's all that matters.

This sounds like one of the better tire discussions I have seen here. I know noise is a personal opinion.
Toasty do you have any experience with Cooper St Maxx?

ClayTK and Canyonero (The one from AZ) ran ST Maxx but mostly highway so I have no idea. I think I was on the trail once with Clay when he had them, They didn't pop but the trail was doable in a 2WD SUV. The Cooper A/T however got a unanimous worst tire ever from like 10 dudes, to give you an idea Rascott ran a set of Nankang Mud Stars on that trip which are basically the cheapest tire you can buy and they did just fine. Sorry for the continued Cooper bash but if you were there you'd get the pretend tire joke.

So for a point of clarification, the Coopers in questions were NOT the AT3 then and were some other, older generation Cooper tire? Because if your are talking about the old A/T's I would agree with you, the AT3's, not so much.
I took off BFG AT KO2' in an 265/75r16 flavor and replaced them with the Cooper AT3 and have had no issues other than not having to use the skinny pedal as much when wheeling. We have fractured basalt and granite for our rocks out here and the coopers have had no issues getting cuts or punctures off road.
You guys did air down right? I only ask because I have seen too many people trash brand X as being crap but didn't match the tire psi to the terrain. Over inflated tires will make ANY tire perform like crap off road.

Don't get your panties in bunch dude, this is all mostly opinion based anyway. I'm glad your coopers hold up to graded dirt roads. We (I assume) are talking about a capable and dependable off road tire.

Yes, everyone was aired down, and yes, coopers didn't hold. In fact, 2 cooper casualties, 0 casualties all other brands. Real life experience. But as I said in previous post, keep on buying pretend tires, it's not my money.

I got so much more then i bargened for with this. I'm not out there trying to rock crawl a vehicle thats not made for that. I'm only a fire road two/ track guy I was just wondering if anyone else noticed the noise . by all means keep going there is some good info from guys who push their equipment much harder then I ever will. I think alot of us ( myself included) will read some online reviews and go buy something that they think is decent but real life is real life

From everything I've seen on the Nankang MTs, nothing but amazing reviews for durability and performance but everyone says the road noise is very very high. I would actually go with the Nankangs (which I believe are rebadged by Maxxis as well) over BFG KM2s.

I'm running KO2s and absolutely love them. Nothing but good things to say about them.

285/75R16 BFG T/A AT KO2 now on my 2005. Nearly silent. Quietest AT I've had on this truck.

These were on my Gen 3 when I bought it a few months ago. Probably about 50% tread and I was quite a bit surprised how noisy they are. Won't be buying them again when I need new tires.

I have to wonder how many of the folks posting about road noise have owned other 4wd vehicles before, or if their Montero was their first and are simply not familiar?

saw my name re:mudstars....
i was 2cheap to buy new bfgs, although i was quite pleased with the used set i ran for a couple of seasons.
suzi is pretty light(even w/all the crap i carry), so i can get by with almost anything.
i run low pressure(12-15psi) and don't do much air up/dn, even for hwy, and think they have a third season in 'em.
no opinion on added noise, but think that type of tire is expensive for day to day driving.......
suzi is not a daily driver.
