Interesting. Says the MPGs got worse with mileage. Wonder if the tread compound changes to one with more hysteresis as you go deeper? Someone on ExPo mentioned that he noticed a significant increase in MPG switching from old AT3s to new KO2s.
That's normal with all off road tires. The rubber blend changes throughout the depth of the tire, with firmer, denser, less pliable compounds found deeper in the tread block. This is why the introduction of silicone compounds in recent years is such a boon to tire performance.

My buddy is using the truck now he said he has about 8-10k on the tires since new. Said they are still doing well.

The material deeper in the tread block is still going to distort and cause energy loss even when the tire is new. The worn tire merely losses the outer layer, and should experience lower resistance, not higher. Unless the tread that is in contact with the ground is the issue? Is there significant scrubbing going on?

This is why the introduction of silicone compounds in recent years is such a boon to tire performance.

Does that mean that the loss of performance and increase in resistance no longer occurs with wear?
