Gen 3 Timing Belt DIY?

Not too difficult, but very time consuming to do right. Interference engine means you can't mess up anything in the timing reassembly. I didn't have a free day to work on it, so I took it to a shop with all the parts I had ordered to do it myself. $400 in parts, and maybe $300 in labor?

One tip that a friend suggested to me (after the fact), that I wish I had known before: before you take off the old belt, mark your timing indicators with a paint pen on the belt, then once its off, line up the old belt with the new belt and transfer the marks over. This helps because even with the cams and crank all lined up you could possibly have x number of teeth between PS cam and DS cam, or Y number of teeth, depending on how tight you pull it. But with the marks you'll know exactly how many teeth should be between the timing marks.

Maybe someone else has another method for ensuring proper belt alignment, but I thought that would have made it really simple if only he had told me BEFORE I did mine.

This is a great tip that I have seen used by people who do timing belt jobs. Mark the pulley, the belt and a fixed part of the engine for reference. Easy insurance on doing it correctly. There is a ton of youtube videos on timing belts but I have yet to see one that is %100 for the Mitsu 3.8 6G75 so you will have to fill in the blanks.

Biggest thing was getting the marks lined up correctly. Other than that it wasn't too bad.
