Geronimo's Trail, New Mexico

Desert Rat 1

Adventurer
Here's a small report of our trip last week to the home lands of the famous chiricahua apache Goyakla, otherwise known as Geronimo.
We started our trip at El Paso, Texas, and after our friends from Juarez, Mexico joined us, we were soon on our way to Monticello, NM. We got on the trail in the Monticello Canyon, and drove through and in the Alamosa Creek, although it is still "winter dry" and the green is barely starting to come back, we were very impressed with it's beauty. I would love to come back in early fall.

Some photos of the first day:

Airing down a bit.

Hey Desert Rat 1, great pictures! Next time you are up for a trail ride, let me know. I'm in El Paso and would like to get out exploring more and let my two little sidekicks see more of the outdoors. I'm not set up for heavy duty trails or crawling (F 250 PSD CC 4x4, limited slip rear) but my old PSD seems to go up, down, around, or through just about anything I point it at and that ride through Monticello Canyon is nice.

Very nice! I love that part of the country. I did a lot of my military education at Fort Huachuca outside of Sierra Vista so I'm somewhat familiar with the region. I was last there in 1993 but I did have my Montero and took a few weekends days to explore the Chiricauha National Forest area.

Some more photos from the first day:

After playing some time on the warm springs, we south on NM52, nice little dirt road with cattle ranches and grassy rolling hills.

Then we turn west into a paved but very scenic NM 59.

Then south on NM 61, the North Star Road.

Wall Lake

Lots of deer...I've got this on video...
