You to can be the proud owner of a 2002 Lada Niva

My wife and i have been driving around south america for the last 4 months and 15,000 km in a Lada Niva that we bought in Ecuador. they still made them there until 2007 when inflation made them to expensive to produce, or so we were told by one of the old plant managers, who we bought the car from. We will be around central Chile around Feb. 15th 2011 and would love to sell it to another traveler. The plates are from ecuador, but we have been asking customs agents along the way and the consensus is that with a notarized document of loan the buyer could then cross borders without problems. We are asking 5000$ US, obo. Let me know if anyone is interested. jluttrel@gmail.com

I commented on your FB pages, the shots are amazing.

Would you be able to post some of the Andes road shots up here? FB is such low resolution and your pics are so good that it would be great to see them in higher resolution here.

Looks like they made it! - I got this email.

Dear all,

It's done! We've made it!! We reached Ushuaia, southernmost town of the American continent. Who would have thought we could drive a Lada down the Panamericana, all the way from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego? But we did it...

Please check our travelogue for photos and more stories about our trip, the good things we experienced and all the troubles we've had...

We are now on our way back North to Buenos Aires where we have to get our car shipped back home. We will fly home on April 29th and will arrive in Frankfurt on April 30th, 10.55am, with Lufthansa flight LH 511.

Coming home!

No thanks on the Lada; after hiring one for a couple of months (albeit some years ago when they were still Soviet-built), I would never buy one.

Russian vs. German Lada

The Nivas made today are still Russian built, but ours was adjusted for Germany, where we bought it. It has better corrosion protection, is sealed so you can go through water without getting wet and has at least some electronics, to make it fulfil German pollution requirements and so on. I agree, a Niva is still not like a brand new Land Cruiser (although it goes as far or even further offraod) but it goes much better and is much more comfortable, surprisingly, then you might guess.

Oh yeah, and by the way: We did it! We drove our Niva all the way from New York to Alaska and from there to the southernmost tip of Tierra del Fuego and to Buenos Aires, where we are now, to ship our car back home.
