GM's impressive new 6.2L V8

GM has released some details about the 6.2L V8, optional in the 2014 Chevrolet and GMC pickups. The new motor produces 420 HP and 460 ft-lb. That's better than any competitor's engine in 2014. The Silverado and GMC "half-ton" trucks can tow an amazing 12,000 lb when equipped with the Max Tow package.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, GM Powertrain is the absolute leader in gasoline engine technology period. There is no other gasoline engine manufacturer that comes close to GM Powertrain in durability, reliability, serviceability and consistency with parts usage. There are reasons why so many non-GM applications use GMPT engines over any other American engine (International, Workhorse Freightliner, Rolls Royce, Mercruiser, VolvoPenta, Hyster, and a long list of stationary well pump and generator sets). You just don’t see companies such as those running out to purchase gas powertrains from Ford or even Chrysler (and Chrysler engines are pretty darn good!). GMPT is to the gasoline engine world as Cummins is to the diesel world.

Those 6.2L numbers are very impressive. That 12,000 lb. towing figure is more than the current HD truck and that is only on a little 1/2 chassis! Let’s just hope the seat of the pants “feeling” when driving these trucks really feels like 420 HP and 460 ft-lb. Manufacturers are real good about making impressive HP claims but then have the ECM so bogged down with Torque Management and other nannies the “seat of the pants” feeling is about half of the manufacturers claims.

Is this the ls3 motor?

Yes, the new Ecotec 3 engines are based on the LS Gen III architecture.

With all the smiles GM gave us with the 6.2L details in the recent days they also dropped the hideous 2015 Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon on us today. The interiors are outstanding, exterior body design is decent but the face of the Tahoe and Suburban is something only its mother could love. Yuk! The Yukon is alright though.

Oh, yeah….the new L83 and LV3 engines will be on exchange through the PQC for quite a while. They do that with any new products for quality review. The new electric power steering components are on PQC as well so they can get their hands on any early failure that may popup. It would be interesting to see what went haywire in this L83 though. I figured your dealer did the PDI and I hope you realize I was only joking about the PDI causing the engine grenade to go off.

I sold my 2009 Denali XL with the 6.2 prior to buying my 2013 Sub 2500. The engine had 402hp and was very fast. It's the Corvette engine with a different intake. Drive one sometime - they're not dumbed down at all. Thank God. I love the SBC engines.

I wouldn't be too concerned about one stillborn engine just yet. There are always teething issues with brand new technology. Look how many Ecoboom engines Ford has replaced and that engine has already been around a few years. Chrysler also had some teething issues on the DI 3.6L when they first installed it in the Jeep Wrangler. With those teething issues gone that 3.6L is proving to be the best engine to ever grace the frame rails of any Jeep.

I think I need a bigger truck!
I have always been a Mopar guy, even a Ford at times guy...never been a fan of GM/Chev. That is with the exception of some very key vehicles and their drivetrains. I will say that their engines are an entirely different story from their vehicles. Good power, low cost, rugged and long lasting and excellent aftermarket support on the SBC stuff, that's a winning combo.

It is always either the styling or the cheap *** plastic crap interiors. Not saying that any of the older Ford/Dodge/Chrysler stuff I have had was tons better, but it never seemed to break with the consistency I saw the GM stuff fail? Also not a fan of a lot of the Econo Box GM stuff... drove a Cruze for a week while working out of town. It was a small town car, a year old and had 30,000 KM's on it and was beat. Interior was coming apart, trans made horrible noises. Rode ok, but felt like a really cheap car. Compare that to the Hyundai Sonata I drove a couple years ago. Was a Toronto rental, had 20,000 KM's more and felt/looked/drove like a new car!

I think GM has come a long way, their trucks and more importantly their engines are very solid. Hope this one is a winner for GM.

Funny quote I read the other day...

"Cummins: Because there is NO ONE doing a Powerstroke swap thread...anywhere".
