Is 53 your projected cruising speed? It'll feel real quick in first! (well, at least compared to another LC)

Yeah we average 53-55 right now. We should be sitting pretty at about 2400RPM at that speed. Might even improve gas mileage.. we'll have to see on that one. Im not holding my breath though.

My biggest problem is heading up long grades and steep mtn roads. We hit an all time low the last couple trips. 18mph. Reason why is because combined we weigh in at just shy of 10,000 lbs. On the flats we do just fine.

Should make a huge difference. Reason i didn't go 4.88's is because its about 200RPM difference and i need all i can get. Motor has too many miles to throw on a Supercharger (and they're hard to find) and not enough money in the wallet for a diesel conversion just yet :D

Only drawbacks are if i resale the 80 without the trailer... it may be a slow top speed for some folks... 60-65mph.. which any faster than that i hardly ever find suitable for any top heavy rig anyways.

I was thinking this was going to be a "glad I installed my snorkel" thread when I saw the title. I'm surprised to see you even mention the possibility of reselling it considering you sold it once and were so happy to get it back, but its such a well prepped rig that it would be a shame to restart with anything less.
There's another option that will drop the final ratio in high range 10% and it will drop low range to either 2.7 or 3.3 ,so that a 4.88 can be run for now and combined with the t-case gears would reduce it to 5.37, and if you did ever sell it you could simply swap back a stock t-case to get the top end back without the trailer, something to think about...

Oh don't get me wrong. It's never going to be sold thats for sure. This truck has too much history with us and has been part of the family for too long. Thats why shes getting all new drive train and some serious attention too in the coming weeks. That motor deserves a long awaited break... it will get new legs so to speak.

And yes, the t-case gear is a great option no doubt.. but im already tearing into the axles to rebuild them so im set for the gear swap as it is.

That's cool and all, but for the $$ you'll spend to regear, you'll be in supercharger territory, which in the end, might be more satisfactory.

Save the 5.29s for when you want to run 37s.

Andrew, if there was any to buy. Do you have a secret source nobody knows about?

On the supercharger debate, like i said in my above post.. the truck has 210k on it. I don't feel that the engine would appreciate having that boost at the present time on the original head gasket.

Im not changing my tire size.. its an expedition rig... not a rockcrawler.. so i have no use for 37's.

As far as trips taking longer..... Not true. We do 53-55mph right now , we aren't going to go any slower. Just more efficient. We pull the trailer and have to stay at 55mph regardless anyhow. Thats the towing law in CA. As regards to other states i don't feel safe towing at 70 mph anyways.

x2. If you don't plan on running anything larger than a 33" tire, you should think about the 4.88's a little more.

It's a difference of 200 RPM... and the power band on the 4.5 liter is at 2400 RPM.. which will be perfect at my cruising speed.

60mph = 2472 rpm's
55mph = 2266 rpm's

Are you kidding me?????? You are limited to 55 mph when towing in CA? Is that any trailer, any size, any tow vehicle?

I don't understand how you people live out there.
