I am getting ready to regear my FJ 60 have been debating between 4.56 and 4.11s, who are you getting to do the work? I am going to have T & J Off Road do the swap, I was really happy with the work they did on my FJ 40. If you aren't sure which gears to go with, just do the rear third and drive it for awhile and see before coughing up the coin to do both and then deciding it's too low. We are going to have to start wheeling together, no one wants to go with me anymore my trucks are too slow. 55 is the new 70! :victory:

mine popped at 230,000 my other one started to go at 220,000 one of the engines i rebuilt started to go at 115,000 food for thought just wouldent want to see you stranded over a hg

Everything i've EVER read was that you never do the HG as preventive maintenance. So i won't touch it till it goes. Also, remember... we put maybe 5,000 miles on our rig a year. It's not our daily driver. And yes ,im well aware of it may go at any time. If it does.. i'll take care of it then. We don't usually travel alone so we aren't too terribly worried about being stranded.

Are you kidding me?????? You are limited to 55 mph when towing in CA? Is that any trailer, any size, any tow vehicle?

Nope, thats the law.. any trailer any size.... and yes any tow vehicle. CA is whacky thats for sure.

Dont go to T and J's. Tom and Mike will charge you way too much. I just heard a quote the other day for $1800 for one axle! Thats insane. What's really insane is that they just take your rig over to Unitrax and have them do the work. And don't get me wrong, the unitrax work they have done is fine.. in fact unitrax is right up the street from us in Anaheim.. and i have them do my 8.8 Axle through ARB warranty before.. it came out fine. It's just T&J's is waay overpriced.

I'd go to two places. All 4 wheel Drive (used to be next to Currie). Great guy and has been doing my families R&P's for 20+ years. Also, Yotamasters. That's where im headed this time. Gear setups are done in house and by a Toyota tech mechanic with 10+ years of experience.

Anytime on heading out together... im never in a rush. Im lucky, the guys i head out with are into a slow pace while driving so you'll fit right in

X 2 on Yotamasters. They have worked on my 4Runner and many friend's Toyota's. Their pricing is good and they are very friendly. They will do my gears when the time comes.

4:88 are a great gear for the 80.....But 5:29's with all your weight sound about right!

With my Taco and trailer.....I have been thinking about the taller 5:29 gear as well. I'm running stock right now.....But with the new 60....$$$$ has been going there.....

I got a quote of $1500 from T&J which was about the same as Hoopers here in LA.

Im well over $2,000.. but they're also doing a front end knuckle rebuild and some other stuff while they're in there.

Low Gears are good and I would rather be on the low side than on the high side. Most modern 'trucks' don't have enough gearing for how I use them pulling, hauling, mountains, high altitude, etc.

I went deep on my V8 4Runner, 4.88s with 'only' 33s. Of course I have a tall overdrive, but the 4.88s work perfectly for my application and driving style. I'm even testing some shorter 265/75 tires and the 4.88s still seem fine.

Your 4.5L has less power/torque so having lower gears to make up for the lack of torque makes lots of sense to me. Gearing multiplies torque, and who doesn't want more torque? :victory:

FWIW,
I swapped my 80 to 4.88 a couple of years ago and I am quite happy.
I am running 315's and pull a M101 when on trip.

I was going to caution you against such a tall gear because of the lack of topend until you got to the "55 is the law" posting.

Where I am (TX) if your not running 70-75mph you'll get run over. I like the 4.88/315 combo that I have but I really would like another OD gear to bring the RPM down a little.

For comparison, on my gear swap I paid $1400 turn key.

I agree with you about getting run over here in TX but technically 65 is the law here while pulling a trailer in our grand state.
