Hello everyone,

I started a thread recently explaining the issue that I am having with my Montero. The details are in the thread:

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/158034-2002-Montero-Limited-Gen3-No-Start-Condition

The car wants to start and it cranks and cranks but wont start. At this point I am at my wits end and want to get it towed to someone who really knows these cars.

I wanted to know if someone knows and can recommend a good shop/mechanic close to my home in Bowie, Maryland.

Really appreciate the help.

Thanks.

Found one in Lanham, MD. He owns 2 Gen 3 Monteros and seemed pretty knowledgeable when talked to. I had the car towed over to him. Now keeping my fingers crossed. Wish me luck :)

Hey newworld2004,

I had the car towed to the shop. The shop did a compression test and told me that cylinder 1 and 4 did not have compression at all. The tech was recommending to take the heads to a shop and have them machine it and then re-install and change the timing belt. All in all, he wanted $3,200 + tax.

So I used the shop for diagnosis but I am going to do the work myself. It just doesn't make sense to spend more money on repairs than what I paid for the car.

I almost got 1 head off and once I get them both off I will get used ones with low miles and put them on. Might take another month but its still ok.

I found that salvage yards are selling complete heads for anywhere between $150-$250. My thinking is to just get those, clean them up and put them in.

What is the problem you have run into?
