Good moon shots this weekend

I just saw in the news that the moon is full and it's orbit is closest to us as it can be tonight and tomorrow. The moon should appear 14% larger and up to 30% brighter so this would be a good night for some nice big full moon shots.

I'm thinking F8 and about 15sec?

I gave it a shot last night. This is a 100% crop using a 200mm lens on my 7D.

Since the moon's light is reflected sunlight I spot metered off the moon in AV mode set at F5 using an ISO setting of 400. The camera came up with an exposure of 1/3200 sec.

Would be much better with a longer lens but this is what I got.

Nice detail! It must have been a clear night in Tucsan. I was way off on the shutter-I'll try the same techique tonight with my 80-200 f2.8.

It should be clear here tonight too. I'll try another shot at ISO 100 and this time use the mirror lock up option to see if I can get it any crisper.

I'm using my 70-200mm F2.8 off a tripod of course. :sombrero:

I have a 1.4 TC that I might try on the lens to pull it in a little closer. The TC softens things a bit but I'll give it a shot see what I can get.

Most of the really detailed moon images I have seen were taken with lenses in the 400mm-600mm range. Not an option for me.

I cant wait to shoot Saturday night. Great moon shots as well as great lighting for night images.

Here is a shot from last month. T2i, Meade ETX-90.

I hope that Saturday works out for others, but around here they are forecasting clouds. So I headed out tonight (Friday) to get some shots. Even tonight the clouds were moving in. At least they broke once in a while to allow some pictures.

Here's my best shot of the night. This was taken with a 70-200 F2.8 lens with a 1.4 TC.

awesome shots all of you.. I love the moon!

Isnt it a trip to look at the inpact craters and the trails of impact.. some of those large ones almost go half way across the entire surface!

You'll want the fastest shutter speed available to you. The moon and earth are in motion, after all.

This was good technical learning experience for me but I as far as just shooting the moon by itself a full moon is like shooting the moon surface at high Noon. You lose the surface shadows and contrast.

I think in the future for full moons I would concentrate on either images like Mike's with it rising behind a cool foreground scene or like Joe said to turn around and just use the moon light to capture long exposure night shots of the landscape.

To really capture the contrasting details of the craters a half moon with the light shining across the surface like Joe did is more appealing to me.

Great shot Brad.

Heading out to dinner with the wife and then will be in the desert for the rest of the night.

Hope these clouds clear up
