for me i got my tech license because i volunteered at work (then a public university) as a pseudo first responder.
we were trained on cpr, first aid, etc. we decided to use ham radios since FRS wasnt gonna cut it so work paid for materials and license fees.
anyways, i never was into chatting on the air and stuff.
what i did end up doing was volunteering for events like bike rides, and car rally events. these are listed under public service, IIRC. first event i worked was a rally event and learned my radio that week.
soon i volunteered for local bike rides and events. those were cool.
