Since I have never owned one yet, I have a few questions. When they first came out, publicly, I wanted this and still do. I figure it should be available now. Any hooo.
I want a GPS unit that is hand held, that will allow me to goto a trail system, and plot all the trails I run on. Then I want to be able to go back and run more trails and have the unit over lap the new trails, eventually I'd upload them to my laptop and print out a map of all the trails in a peticular area.
So what units will aloow this? Also what soft ware should the laptop have? Topo map?THANKS!:)

Any of the handheld mapping GPS's should do it (at least the Garmin's). You can mark things with waypoints as you go, then upload them to the mapping software (you may want to buy additional topo map software versus the software that comes with the unit, which is usually pretty basic).

You could also look for bundled versions of software/GPS unit.

One place to look is ebay on lesser-known brand handhelds like Lowrance iFinders ... I've seen mapping ones go for $30.

Yep, most of the current mapping GPS units will do what you want. They log what's called a track file which is like dropping bread crumbs everywhere you go. You can then upload that trackfile to PC based maping software like Garmin Mapsource or National Geograpgic Topo.

Here's an image of a track file from my last camping trip. This was done with NG Topo.
