Great trip report... Best thing Clinton ever did was making The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

That is surely debatable... I'll save that rant for another place & time :shakin:

Beautiful shot and a great write-up. We are thinking of a similar trip in sept. after a weekend Triathalon in Saint George. This gives me some great ideas for the route. Thanks

Tim and Kurt, thanks for sharing your writeups! This was an orientation trip for another trip I am taking some friends on in October, thanks for the ideas.

Tim, too bad we didn't meet. We went down and up Left Hand Collet Sunday afternoon/Monday morning. When did you go through?

Kurt, I have heard of doing the Paria River before and thought someone was mixing it up with another river. This is waaaay cool:

Is that in Sheep Springs Cyn or Paria? I am not crazy about spending that much time in the water. According to the gauging station you had 20cfs that day, it sure looks like more on some of the photos. Today it shows ~6cfs, go figure.

Also, where would I find this?

That looks like something worth seeing on the next trip. We must have passed nearby but didn't notice the smoke.

This was also an interesting spot for our trip:

I was only planning on driving down that road 1/2 hour to check the condition, the turn around and head to Alstrom Point. We came around the corner to find a black dually truck sitting there, unoccupied, with both doors hanging wide open. It kind of took us by surprise as we hadn't seen any other humans for the past day or so and weren't expecting to see any at this point. We kept on going for the 1/2 hour, turned around and started coming back. Now there is a second truck there, a big white stakebed parked across the road. We have both been reading a lot of Tony Hillerman lately so that didn't help our building paranoia. There was just enough room to squeeze by the stakebed, then we see some dogs running around, a couple of saddles on the fence and two horses in the corral. A young kid in a cowboy hat was just visible inside one of the now open shipping containers. Apparently it was roundup time, they had cattle down that canyon and backed in the stakebed to unload the horses. Seems like a mighty hard way to make a buck, but the office sure has a nice view!

I can't remember if that was still Sheep Springs or if we had already intersected the Paria. The lack of water makes me think it was Sheep Springs.

Those are the Burning Hills, just off of the Croton Road (kind've runs parallel to the Smoky Mountain Road). I could send you some GPS coords if you would like.

Yes, that would be great! alexhimes @ yahoo.com
I am a GPS junkie, you can send any file type that will work with Garmin Mapsource or National Geographic TOPO! 4.0.
Thanks, Kurt!

Tim, I'll bet you and I are the only people who have camped in that canyon this year, one right after the other no less!

Dang, it looks like we drove right by that place. I'll definately stop and look around next time.

Kurt, have you been to Alstrom Point before? Does Grand Bench have anything to offer that Alstrom Point doesn't as far as views and decent campsites taking advantage of said views? I'm trying to decide weather to include it in the next trip or not and I haven't been to Grand Bench to judge for myself.

I never even thought for a second that smokey mountian road was named after...... wel..... ya know. A literal smoking mountain. I'll put that down on my list of things to do next time!

Crazy! We should have an official, unofficial HAM radio channel that we turn it to when we head out to wheel. Once more people have these radios we may actually run into each other sometimes!
Wasn't that canyon a great camping spot!? Did you pass the little indian ruins back before you entered the canyon?
