Grease your driveshafts ... or else

Greasing makes sense. For sure.
Depending on the property of the seals it makes more sense.
But I don't recognized the outflew of old grease comming out of all of the seals at the same time.
The grease always finds the flow of smallest resistance.

How do you replace the remaining grease inside the remaining 3 bearings? :coffee:

The theory behind seeing it purge all 4 parts of the cross is that you KNOW it's flowed to all sets of needles. That's an obvious statement I know. But, just because it doesn't, doesn't mean the new grease didn't get there (path of least resistance theory) but it also could indicate an issue with the joint. Most of the time a healthy U-joint will purge all 4.

Don't believe in greasing at 5K or less invervals? Why not? It's nothing more than and oil change for the U-joints. You push all that dirty, moisture ridden old grease out and replace it with new joy joy. Think about how much stess and pressure are put on those tiny needles in a relatively small bearing. All the horse power and gear reduction go through those. Is $.50 worth of grease NOT worth it?

When the seal is worn, the grease will come out!
This will take seconds or minutes, depending on the wrong seal and the rpm.

Nevertheless it will take normaly years to this. But it happens.

Just change the inner parts, grease them as well have a nice one.

Hum, probably why Tom keeps emphasizing this.

So how long does a driveshaft u-joint last?

In general, ball park miles or kms.

Thx

The reason for seeing new grease come from all 4 seals is to purge the old dried and contaminated (with water and grit) grease out. If they don't purge, you haven't gotten the crud out.
This applies to any cardan greaseable u-joint. Frequency is determined by how the vehicle is used. 5,000 is for "normal" use. Mix of highway and around town driving.
Once you're off-road or winter driving where salt is used, then the mileage goes down. Probably why Land Rover says 3,000.

I don't know if there's a ballpark mileage for longevity, too many variables.

I do mine anytime I get back from playing in any water. Whole different "squish" sound when water comes out with the grease!

Yes, same with mud or a lot of dirt. And winter driving in salty areas. All things that aren't part of "normal" use that require more frequent greasing.
