Sitting at the drive thru this afternoon, I'm waiting for an Oreo milkshake when I see a Defender 110 drive by. I pointed it out to my girlfriend and she agrees when I suggest taking a closer look.
Normally any 110 will catch my eye, I just don't see very many in my neighborhood. This one had an Eezi Awn RTT mounted as well as a snorkel and some muddies. But what really caught my eye was the color. I'm used to white ones and green ones, but this one was a blue-ish, grayish color.
It stopped at the gas station, so I pulled up to snap a pic. Unfortunately all I had was my phone on me, so a crappy cell phone pic would have to do -
As I started to pull away, the owner caught my eye just as I spotted a Pangaea Expeditions sticker on the back.
"Did you buy some stuff from Nathan?" I asked, pointing at the sticker.
"Uh, yeah. He's my Brother...." he replied.
"No kidding? I know Nathan. We did a trip together in Colorado a couple of years ago. My name is KC. I was admiring your 110."
"Thanks, my name is Dustin. So do you know a guy named Graham? It used to belong to him."
Graham Jackson? Sure! He and Connie were on the same trip with us in Colorado. Where are you headed?"
And so began a brief but pleasant conversation with Dustin, brother of Nathan Hindman and owner of the Defender 110 that Graham apparently once owned before his legendary trip to Cape Town. I gave Dustin some pointers for camp sites in Yellowstone NP, where he and his wife are heading on holiday.
My milkshake was turning soupy in the heat and they still had a ways to go so we wrapped it up and said our farewells. As I pulled away my girlfriend just shook her head, laughing at the small world we live in. So don't be afraid to stop and talk to a guy with an RTT and snorkel. You never know who you may meet.
