Let's see yer homebrew targets here :)

NO ! ...not the tv or beer bottles U sucked down

decided to whip something up
that was better then a paper target.

designed primarily for .22
as it's only 1/4" mild steel plate.
tho' I'll likely shoot it with the 30/30
at least once, just to see what happens :D

will break down easy, lay flat
'bout 4' wide and 20" tall to the horizontal rod.

^ I've yet to complete the upper rod mounts (these pics)
rod ends will be secured using collars (drill depth stops)

guess I'll need test it... see if it can handle some abuse :dunno:

You should only use abrasion resistant steel for targets. AR400 for pistol and 22LR and AR500 for magnum pistol and rifles. 3/8 inch is the preferred thickness. The hardened plates cause the rounds to shatter when they strike the target. This splatter will exit at a 20 degree angle to the plate surface in all directions. Soft steel will deform when hit and increases the ricochet hazard. Also as it gets cratered the soft steel will start launching splatter and ricochet in random directions. Most accidents from shooting steel are from the wrong type of steel and short ranges (10 yards min pistol and 50-300 for rifle depending on the caliber).

That being said, nice work! Looks like a fun target. I would stick to 22's and start at 50 yards and check for impact craters before moving closer. I buy my plates then very poorly weld stands to hold them :)

Sorry for the crappy pic... but the plate is a 3/8 thick AR500 half sized IDPA target. The tube is 1.5" DOM, and the whole thing comes apart and sets up easily.

thanks for the info and links... can't imagine shipping on plate steel is going to be cheap.
I really need find a local resource. ID and IL are not local friendly.

Not quite a hostage taker, those usually have a round plate that swings shoulder to shoulder when hit.

I get my plates from TheTargetMan, he ships with USPS flat rate boxes, which are cheap and hold a max of 70lbs.

I helped a local range build some targets.

Simple knockdown pistol targets built out of 3/8" A514 T1 plate

Rifle swinging targets made from 3/4" AR400 plate

I'll post some pictures as soon as they get the targets installed.
