Hannibal Double Jerry Can Holder

they look cool, and that's my problem. I love the character they add to a rover. I just can't justify them. For the added wind resistance on a day to day basis, I see them as worthless. I would feel stupid when my friends say "those are cool, what's in them?" "oh, they're empty. but they look cool, though. and I use them when I camp once a month."

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy seeing the different things people do with their trucks. I'm coming from the angle that I've always wanted a legitimate reason to mount some because I love the looks. I just haven't found one yet.

i'll leave water in the blue can 90% of the time, the gas won't be filled unless i plan on having a decent excursion for a day or two. call it "poser" if you wish, i don't care. i plan on using them quite frequently when i take a trip to texas this summer for a few weeks, as well as a camping trip or 2 down in the everglades.

honestly, the wind noise isnt noticable at interstate speeds. now when the wind is blowing perpendicular to the truck you can feel them. my biggest concern is the CoG effects, i'll need to remove them if i plan on doing any truly serious wheeling or make sure they are empty.

there really isnt a big need to use them in the SE US, everything is so close by...normally, but if you spend enough time driving in circles in the middle of nowhere (as i often do in national forests and what not) it does allow me for more time to look for snakes and to have fun driving around. and yes, i've gone through 3/4 of a tank in 1 day in the same national forest (including travel to and fro)

I love my Hannibal dual jerry can holder. I also got some singles from British Pacific. Now if I only had a Hannibal rack to mount them to...

Has anyone effectively mounted the holder to an SD rack? How does it attach?

it has 2 slots that run the full width of the holder, 1 on each end. allowing you to put the mounting bolts anywhere along the slots giving you a fairly wide range of places to mount it anywhere along the rails of the hannibal rack's "track" like system.

i'm pretty sure you could mount it to an SD rack with some drilling, worst case scenario you'd need to add some aluminum cross bars to the holder's base at the proper distance between the bars of the SD.

I used my cans near Atlanta during the Great Gas Crunch of September '08.

They were filled for the trip to the National Rally in Utah and I didn't need them until the gas stations were out due to the hurricanes.

Now I fill them up for hurricane season.

these were pics from a trip in december. Pecayune and Fakahatchee Strands. nothing extreme with regards to driving by any means basically just dirt roads, mud, and a lil flooding (it is the everglades after all)....however the animals make up for the excitement that the driving lacked.

Wow - quite a way to spend the day! Let me know if you need a 2nd truck or a co-pilot. I'd love to cruise down from St. Pete and go with you on those of those trips!

Regarding the jerry cans, I do as a few others on here mentioned and also make sure I have both of my cans full at the start of each hurricane season.

Tim,

I'd buy at least two; more if you can stand the price.

And for what you'd use them for, the CARB cans would be okay as well, IMO.

well we keep over 50 gallons of gas in cans during hurricane season in our garage, sadly its all for our generator/chainsaw etc. During Charley in 2004, we lost our roof and had no power for 2 weeks. all the gas ran out, national guard even had to help direct folks to gas stations in an orderly manner.

I honestly didnt think about this when i bought the jerry can, but its one damn good way to justify the purchase being from South Florida.

Telwyn, when the temps warm up out of the low 70s, i'll give you a call. just keep your eyes posted on the forum in the planned section or in the regional sections. I'll post up next time around. It isn't really wheeling, a subaru outback could do most of it. 2wd isnt an option though when it gets that wet, the everglades is NOT a place where i would allow someone to bring a dumb mud truck and tear up the land. its one place where tread lightly is a must.

I've done the trip stock, on street tires, in both my Disco and my father's LR3. its a joke with regards to driving, i do it only for the animals and scenery.

Well I hope you have better luck with those jerry can holders than I. I hate them and don't use them anymore. Used them on a long trip a few years ago and they scratched/scored the **** out of my cans. Eventually put some foam and rubber bits around the metal of the holders to prevent additional damage to the cans. Yeah, mostly cosmetic, but the rate of scoring was so bad that I began to wonder if they'd wear a hole through the cans. Not to mention a natural aversion to scraping metal in close proximity to fuel.

I bought two Hannibal Jerry Can holders but got Scepter Plastic Jerry Cans and they never fit, so I have two brand new holders and put my tanks in the cargo area. Mine look slightly different though as I bought them back in 2004 I think. Those curved parts on there. I guess the new Nato metal cans are different now?

IOW, if I sell my Scepter cans and get the new style Nato metal cans, will they fit the existing Hannibal racks I have?? I'd really like to use them if possible... I paid $179 each plus exchange, shipping , duty and taxes and they have been paper weights.

new style nato?? do you mean CARB cans with the screw on tops?

post a picture of what your holders look like.

is this how it looks? the small lateral support piece on the top latching arm is different from the way mine is, yet it is what is listed on Hannibal's dealer site that i ordered from. i believe it is just an old stock photo from Hannibal.

i'm gonna take a guess and point the finger at the scepter cans, but i could be wrong.

Yeah those are the racks I have but in black. The Scepter cans are plastic and they won't fit in the hannibal racks since they are a bit different and too large. The handle config for the cross bar is off and the top piece that holds the cans from squishing out the sides is not wide enough to hold them in place. They plastic cans also tend to bulge with any kind of heat.

I have two 20L and two 10L green fuel cans, plus two 20L and two 10L brown water jugs if anyone is interested. I'll buy the ones from AB or EE if they still have some that will fit my racks. Can anyone confirm that these cans will the racks in the pic above like the racks I have?
