Hello Conqueror Owners

Honu

lost on the mainland
you know you could waterproof the sides since there will be plenty of other areas for it to breathe :)

but the only thing you dont want to use something that wont let the fibers swell up
I have no clue what that is but sure you could find out

I would say if you get one try it then decide if you need to waterproof it more

as far as setup to cooking it depends on how you set things up etc..

I did not use the fly but if I was spending more than 2 days I would

setup time ? I just used the corner stakes on the room but I could have the tent deployed and staked in minutes
I kept the sleeping bags and pillows up there so tops 5 minutes total

cooking you can fold down the side door keep your stove there and my side cabinet is shelves I ripped out the foam stuff and spices and other stuff is in there so you can be cooking very quick

time wise ? I am not sure but usually get my family settled in and everything out and including chairs around the fire and everything under or around 15 minutes or so
a few nights I pulled in late I was deployed and cooking in less than 10 minutes

sorry for the huge images :) but have not had time to resize them and they are just point and shoot quality :)

I did use the flaps during the day as shade
web.jpg

you can kinda see the shelves here instead of the foam

web.jpg

I am going to make a custom pull out setup soon :)

also I kept my tent flaps rolled up usually saved me doing it after I pulled the tent out
notice the nose wheel down
I put down the rear stabilizers then drop the nose wheel and give it a small turn to help it put pressure on the rear stabilizers and the thing is solid

Honu: What us the blue thing on top of your tent? Did you add that ... or is your water shield blue from new?

Also, how is that Honda Generator working out? I have yet to get one. Just wondering if you like it. Had considered it or the dual fuel Yamaha.

Thanks
Dendy

PS: HillDweller, ... where are you located?

Thanks

its just the point and shoot we have does not do well into sun :) so its just the normal top it just looks blue cause of the light

I love the geny was nice to have on our trip as I did not have my batteries hooked up to my rig yet

I was going to do the yamaha and to long of a wait to get one of the tri fuel ones ?
and needed it for our trip and it just happened to go on sale

I am glad I got the 2000 as I can run it on eco mode and you dont hear it or hardly hear it once its about 40 feet from ya
also the honda fits perfect in the nose cone and seems like it might be easier to lift in and out over the yamaha ?

...in the hills, of course.
Canton, GA --- 1/2 hour up 575 from Atlanta.

We'll have to meet in the middle and have a single malt.
There's a nice spot on the east side of GSMNP where they've done an elk release; I'd love to set up there and watch the herd for a couple of days. We were there 2 weeks ago and the rut was on; bulls were bugling --- it was magnificent...

Honu,

You're the man of the hour...I think folks are picking up on the whale of a deal these Conquerors represent.

Coupla more questions...

1) Is there any way to put a little more tension on the tent's rain canopy? It looks kinda, umm, saggy in the photo above.

2) It looks as though the Conquest and Base Camp come with a canvas master rain fly and the Compact comes with a nylon one. How's the quality of the grommets? My TT will need to handle abundant rain since I'll be taking my time to drive through CentAm on my way to Chile. It'll get its fair share of rainshowers and wind.

3) Do the master rain fly poles store in between the water tanks like on the "old" Compacts or do you have to toss them in the main cargo area / strap them to the rack?

4) I don't see any petcocks for the water tanks....on the "old" Compacts there were petcocks on either side of the tent pole stow box. How do you drain the water tanks?

Thanks for your time and congrats on the screamin' TT deal.

Bill:

My folks grew up in North Georgia (Dad in Toccoa and Mom in Winder).
We spend a good bit of time in Highlands/Cashiers area. We love staying near the Dillard House (Good Food!)

Would love to hear more about the Elk area!

Dale Knepp is a dear friend in Charlotte and he has a Base Camp. We should all plan a meet and camp!

Thanks

Hi, Nothing Clever:

Not trying to answer for Honu, but I have a Conquest (the big brother of the Compact ... and no longer available), however the tent is the same. Check out my thread:
http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16068

You can see how tight the tent gets. You can also see that the door flys can be used instead of the master fly.
On mine, the poles do store between the water tanks, and the water cocks are on each side of that storage area.

Hope that helps.

Wow, that's more like it! Nice job on the set-up, Dendy, and thanks for the re-direct.

You wouldn't happen to dabble in European motorcycles would you?

I have a good buddy who used to be the president of the Nashville European Motorcycle Club.

Superb riding partner....I'd go anywhere with that guy.

Don't do the motorcycle thing, but I have some Land Rover pals here that do.
One of them is pretty active and has many land rovers.

Thanks for the comments on the set up. Works well for us.

1) Is there any way to put a little more tension on the tent's rain canopy? It looks kinda, umm, saggy in the photo above.
guess that was covered :) as I say I dont stake out my tent really sometimes just the base or sides but while it looks a touch saggy :)
it still works and is quicker

my top is very nice and heavy fabric but it wont be the one you have ?
as far as other quality of the tent a few who have seen it and have also seen a ton of RTT the quality is top notch
I did have to mend a couple spots where there are clips that hold the bottom of the extra room off the ground
its where a strap goes up through the tent material it pulled out ? the others are not showing anything though and that is a small thing everything else is fine

3) Do the master rain fly poles store in between the water tanks like on the "old" Compacts or do you have to toss them in the main cargo area / strap them to the rack?
the other compacts I have seen in pics the rear tent stake holder is behind the bumper more ? but its between the tanks

4) I don't see any petcocks for the water tanks....on the "old" Compacts there were petcocks on either side of the tent pole stow box. How do you drain the water tanks?
like the tent stake pole holder they are kinda under and behind the bumper ?

on another post I decided if it was raining again I was going to try something out
get a large tarp about 12x18 feet or so
and either use poles or string it up over the trailer area so I can set it up under the cover of a tarp and also take down under the cover of the tarp

the big awning below is on top of the tent so you can put up the awning and then setup the tent under it ? which is fine cause this is a nice setup for its own way

but the big blue tarp would keep the tent dry which would be nice so I can store it dry and put it up dry etc..

a few pics I posted before

Jeff: Good thing you were out, but you are behind. He has purchased, seasoned, video taped and stored his trailer ... since Saturday!

He did get it in front of his mini!

Good to hear from you, though!

Yes; thanks. Hadn't thought of that.
Actually, it was quite chilly and the flap spent most of the time securely fastened...
I'm amazed at how warm it was inside the tent in the morning.

yeah the tent does a good job :)

I think in the chat somewhere we talked about heaters ? or was that another thread maybe about staying warm ?

but I (and others) have that MrBuddy heater ! and MAN that thing warms the tent inside up in no time
of course the wife and our 4 year old stay warm and snug and dad (thats me) has to get cold to go crank it on :) but in a few minutes the tent is so so so nice we can all get up as a family and take our time getting dressed and ready etc..
I had it going for about 2 hours one morning and it was nice as it took out all that damp feeling of our bag and clothes etc.. that cold mornings usually bring :)
