Hello need some help looking for a roof top tent which has some sort of opening to see stars etc when the weather is good but also is usable when its pouring rain :) I looked at several sites and CVT says they can add a star gazer to the model you order? so does that mean they cut that unit and thats what you get? any one have a Tepui tent with this option?? any pics etc would be great

Yep. Tepui has a couple models with that feature the Kukenam Sky and the Autana Sky. I've been using the Kukenam Sky for the past year on my own truck and it's been great. These are both 3 person tents.

Kukenam Sky (available in grey or olive green)

Autana Sky (available in tan)

I've got the Autana Sky, and the roof openings are one of the main reasons I bought it. Great for nighttime view but also for ventilation during the day when it's warmer. The only issue with the Autana is the sky panels are blocked when the rainfly is on. So if you're looking at doing some stargazing during the rain, then that might be an issue. I haven't used the rainfly yet, there's another solid panel covering the mesh sky panel that would work for light rain, but I'm guessing would leak in a heavy downpour. If that's the case, then there probably aren't many stars to look at anyway.

If it is warm and dry why not just take off the rain fly?

In my experience you are either worrying about staying dry enough or cool enough. When it is raining worry about keeping the rain out, other times control temperature with the fly.

Heavy rain in the heat is no fun, not much you can do about it in a tent.

There's no need to completely remove the rainfly to use the open roof. Look at the photos I posted. When I open the top of mine, I just unclipped the corners of the rainfly and rolled it back the the center line of the roof. That way if it started raining in the night, its easy to just stand up in the tent and roll it back into place and never have to get out of the tent.

If you can find an Oasis II, they open as well if you remove the fly

I tried that a few times when I first got the tent, but I just decided to remove the fly altogether because it's one less hassle to deal with. I'm in CA where were in the middle of a 4 year drought, so any rain that happens would barely get the fabric wet. Most of the time I just rely on the fabric panels to cover it because I love opening those windows first thing in the morning. I'll probably put it back on (or at least keep it in the car) when I go to the sierras in a couple weeks.

There is velcro surrounding those roof windows and on the Tepui website it mentions a "clear window accessory", but I don't think I've ever seen a picture of it. While I think it might be cool to have clear window on top, I don't know how great it work for stargazing though a wrinkled piece of plastic, and I would be worried about the longevity of it. Every convertible jeep window I've seen looks like crap after a while.

Good morning,

We do have them available in 8 different models from our smaller Mt. Cailey, Bailey to our largest Mt. Adams and McKinley.
What it means is that when you order a tent you can choose the stargazer option and that way we know you want a stargazer tent, to which ever model you choose. If you have any other questions please let me know.

Hate to think what that clear pvc window will look like in a year's time out in the sun. That and having to deal with the condensation dripping off it like a solar still.

One thing to remember this will not be out in the elements all the time like a Jeep (with a soft top)would be. But if that plastic does not hold up we will replace it with another one or a different fly. We stand behind what we do. That is why we were the first to offer the 2 year warranty on the roof top tents.
We offer it this way because some folks wanted to have it. Me personally, I just remove the fly to enjoy the night.

I agree with this. The clear plastic does distort your viewing, and IMO defeats the purpose. With all of the Tepui SKY models I've sold, I've never sold a set of the clear windows and frankly I'm not surprised. It's much clearer viewing through the no-see-um mesh windows. The other drawback I see with the clear plastic is that it will get folded and creased with repeated stowing of the tent, and after a while that stiff plastic will start to dry out and those creases could crack. Finding out you've got a crack in one of those in the middle of a downpour may not be ideal. Just one guys opinion.
