Looking to use plywood to make a flat storage platform in my xj like above photo. How would you guys go about figuring out where to cut for the wheel wells? Cardboard template? What about securing it to the floor. Bolts right through the floor? Should I lay something underneath the plywood? The back seats and carpet have been completely removed from my jeep. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd suggest poster board for templates.
A good coat of bedliner can help kill some of the tin can effect and keep rust away. Mines still a work in progress and I did drawers instead of a platform base so I can't offer much input.

I scribed the contours onto sheets of cardboard...it worked beautifully. The support legs are lengths of 2-inch ABS pipe. I used t-nuts to connect short lengths of chain to turnbuckles which anchor to pre-existing tie-down points.

WOW!!! I already bought some materials to start making a rear platform, and your post completely changed everything. Great idea! Don't mind if i steal it.

OP, there's a huge stuck topic in the Storage Solutions forum dedicated to rear platforms / drawers
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/9034-Post-up-your-drawer-storage-system

In there are a few flat platforms that are real works of art, with aluminum tracks and locking tie-downs, a couple with slide-out tables. And of course a great many drawer platforms with forward extensions or panels that bridge the uneven area of folded 2nd row seats, to enlarge the sleeping area.
