Tesla did a lot of things right with aero and efficiency. I don't doubt that it's fine for long trips now that the charging infrastructure is good. But the issue with electric "do everything" vehicles is still the weight, size, and expense of the battery pack, particularly if you are towing or hauling.Although I like my Tundra for long road trips, my wife's model S does just fine.
Tiny electric vehicles with shorter range (urban specific) would make a lot more sense... but we'd need to repurpose the infrastructure somewhat to make them safe.
