Here we go! Short notice trip to Moab...

Great photos, it sounds like you had a nice tour of the area.....you didn't stop and get out at Gemini Bridges :( it's really close the the "road" that you came back across...

Ah well, gotta leave something for next time ;)

Great photos!

Moab is certainly one of my favorite winter destinations :sombrero:.

There's an awesome frozen waterfall that forms near the Syncline Loop hiking trail, accessed from White Rim trail. Kinda hard to reach, tho, since you have to pick the right day. Mineral Bottom wasn't gated two years ago, but the road is no picnic when it's partially covered in snow, and the other half is mud, and it's a shelf with Certain Death ten feet away. Wish I'd had chains and lockers when I drove it, but I'm alive and the truck only had open diffs and all-terrains.

Pucker Pass/Long Canyon is also a little hairy when there's a good deal of snow and ice on it :hehe:

I liked seeing the photos of the spur off the Delicate Arch parking lot. Always wondered what was up there.

Yeah, and we only went a short distance along that road due to the fact that the sun was setting. I would like to have continued on. Looking at both the maps and Google Earth it appears that the road goes up onto the plateau that overlooks the Colorado River canyon from the North side. I'd definitely like to go back, maybe a little later in the year when it's all dry. Actually, autumn would probably be the best time to go.

Talked to a local last September. An arson burned the bridge. There is suppose to be a group trying to raise funds to reconstruct it.

Great report and pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Day 1: Thursday, Feb 19th:

We took the Cisco road (which was much rougher and narrower than I remembered!) and stopped to photograph the sad remains of the old Dewey Bridge.

Glad to hear at least it wasn't intentional.
Parents insurance cover it?

Not sure but I'm pretty sure they did not. There was some talk about this being a "repeat" offender and whether or not charges would be filed. I personally felt charges of "child endangerment" should have been filed against the parents. Allowing an unsupervised child to have access to matches could easily have lead to his own death if not the lives of others. Its time to legalize adulthood and parenthood. Sorry for the hi-jack.

Great trip report. It's a shame that the lower section of Long Canyon is closed to camping these days. There weren't many spots, but they were nicely spread out along the road and it's a wonderful place it was to wake up in.

Moab is definitely a great place to get away to during the late fall. I've been down a couple of times in mid-November and hope to make an annual trip of it soon. It gets cold at night, but usually warms up quite nicely during the day, enough so that I was able to put the top down on my car when I was driving through Arches.

Very cool pictures! Those cave houses remind me the same things I saw when I was in Iran:

When I was in Kuwait in 2004 it was very common to see, out in the desert, a large bedouin tent (maybe 40 x 80' in size) out in the middle of the desert, with a generator, air conditioner units, a row of luxury SUVs parked out in front, and of course, the satellite dish!

Apparently it was the Kuwaiti's version of "camping." :D
