It's been awhile and I figured I would join a worthwhile forum before getting into Land Rovers again. I have been following the forum and the fantastic mods of Red Rover and LT. to name a few and others. I'm trying to decide on a Range Rover Classic or a Disco I.
I'm a network engineer by profession, but for the past 4 years I have been building and managing large Solar Farm sites in the 100 Mw range.
I find myself in really desolate areas of the USA, mostly desert. I want to build a truck I can use to reach the areas that I work in.
Gasoline powered, is out of the question, mainly because RR and Disco's range while gasoline powered are horrible, so diesel is my only option. It also doesn't help that we have very little gas on hand at sites and usually only for the gas powered ranger buggies the crews use. We have plenty of diesel on hand since all gen sets and equipment require it.

I am leaning toward OBD I vehicles only, as California has very strict emissions laws. My father-in-law is a Customs Officer in San Diego, so I am aware what can and cannot be imported legally. I'm sure many have asked the same question I am asking as to what power-train combo works best. I have followed quite a few forums and websites and to best combinations, but I am still lost. There is so much guessing and attitudes towards certain combination that you would think the manufactures were giving out commissions!!

I think this forum has most others beat hands down. The projects your members work on actually work and get completed in real time!

So there it is. I would like to benefit from all the knowledge and experience of this forum to help me decide what to build and what to power it with. My main concern is emissions legality. It's an area that I am still learning much about. Since neither the 200 tdi, 300 tdi or TD5 were ever federally Emissions certified in the United States, I don't see how they would pass. The TD5 is rated for catalysts but since it never reached our shores in a production vehicle, I don't see that happening either. The 6.2 Hummer motor is Emissions certified, but never came in a RR or Disco. I saw Red Rover was going with a Mercedes Diesel in a RR also. I don't expect a speed demon. I want a reliable diesel preferably an auto box, I don't do serious off roading, so if the manual will make the conversion less complicated and/or increase range, then I am ok with it.

I don't care much if the engine is British,German,American,Japanese etc. Whatever you think would be most reliable, cost effective and above all squeeze me past emissions and safety check..please

Thanks for any and all information.. all inputs welcomed.

Welcome around here.
I had 2 300Tdis (in Europe), and I do recommend them *very* much, I see them from time to time in California, so there has to be a way to do that legally (I even saw a Td5 here with CA plates, so there has to be some way to do it). This is by far the most efficient and reliable LR set up.
Some of us are crazy enough to maybe try at one point a conversion into 6.2 GM or Mercedes diesels, but it is a lot of work and I am not sure about reliability and all that, since it will be a custom solution.
Whatever you decide, keep us posted, when my 4.2 goes, a diesel swap will be in order...

Thanks =) I also had a 300 tdi in Scotland and I loved it. I'm leery about some of the plated diesels you mentioned. I saw a 2001 Disco in Orange County last week with a 300 tdi..plated but no OBD II :Wow1 the owner didn't do the work , he said it drives fine and no dash lights are on(probably pulled bulbs) and it was smogged for him once he got it.. Not what I'm looking for. I know smog techs that can make anything pass, but I need to be legal. I travel in and out of federal reservations and have to go through spot checks all the time, even though I'm not worried about that, there has to be a way to legally do this. I agree with you, I have seen a few in Southern California..so I'm hoping it can be done. I want it simple so that's why I am leaning towards OBD I..better chance of passing smog. I would love a TD5, but way too expensive and for a pre 95' 200 tdi or 300 tdi would do fine.
Regards..

Welcome to the fray indeed, this is a great community indeed but one other venue you may want to frequent is the Defender Source. The struggles of our Cali comrades there may not be a 1:1 comparison for you compared to their trials with getting 25yr old Defender's registered and legal in the People's Republic but I'm betting there is similarity.

Likewise there is a fair amount of technical expertise over there on the diesel engine (as there is here)-folks like Robert Davis who is doing a lot with the MB diesel in Land Rover applications and the like. All things being equal, if I were building a D1 (or RRC) and had the requirement to make it diesel I'd go one of two ways:

300 TDi using a front clip from a donor D1 (there are some for sale here and there already done, but given your application I'd want to do it myself to know it all cold)
or
MB TDi and tap into the budding expertise in that realm

I do fear the legal issues will be significant-even if OBD 1 and such is taken into account. Good luck & Semper Fi if the username is indicative of time spent as a grunt.

Thanks Ray, yes I'm one of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children :jumping: Semper Fi, I traded in my Black Cadillac's a while back. I like your Idea of the front clip, but I also agree about wanting to know everything is done correctly. If I go 25 years back..I can get a 1989 RRC and maybe avoid some smog issues as it would be exempt., well not completely in the eyes of the Federal Emissions folks, but maybe they won't pay that much attention to me? I'm still torn between a 1989/1990 RRC SWB or a 1995 Disco I. Any thoughts?

I've been told by a few that I should look into importing half a Disco 2 with a TD5 if I want to use a newer model. I can check with my father-in-law regarding how much of it I can bring in etc. I have friends in England so sourcing and verifying that I don't end up with a pig in a Chanel gown is easier :Wow1: I still think I will stick with older model, I'm not Donald Trump and going the half clip route would make it easier, just swap all components over to donor vehicle. I think the RHD may cause some issues with some parts, either way it feels expensive ++
Thank's for the link, looking at it right now..
