It's been awhile and I figured I would join a worthwhile forum before getting into Land Rovers again. I have been following the forum and the fantastic mods of Red Rover and LT. to name a few and others. I'm trying to decide on a Range Rover Classic or a Disco I.
I'm a network engineer by profession, but for the past 4 years I have been building and managing large Solar Farm sites in the 100 Mw range.
I find myself in really desolate areas of the USA, mostly desert. I want to build a truck I can use to reach the areas that I work in.
Gasoline powered, is out of the question, mainly because RR and Disco's range while gasoline powered are horrible, so diesel is my only option. It also doesn't help that we have very little gas on hand at sites and usually only for the gas powered ranger buggies the crews use. We have plenty of diesel on hand since all gen sets and equipment require it.
I am leaning toward OBD I vehicles only, as California has very strict emissions laws. My father-in-law is a Customs Officer in San Diego, so I am aware what can and cannot be imported legally. I'm sure many have asked the same question I am asking as to what power-train combo works best. I have followed quite a few forums and websites and to best combinations, but I am still lost. There is so much guessing and attitudes towards certain combination that you would think the manufactures were giving out commissions!!
I think this forum has most others beat hands down. The projects your members work on actually work and get completed in real time!
So there it is. I would like to benefit from all the knowledge and experience of this forum to help me decide what to build and what to power it with. My main concern is emissions legality. It's an area that I am still learning much about. Since neither the 200 tdi, 300 tdi or TD5 were ever federally Emissions certified in the United States, I don't see how they would pass. The TD5 is rated for catalysts but since it never reached our shores in a production vehicle, I don't see that happening either. The 6.2 Hummer motor is Emissions certified, but never came in a RR or Disco. I saw Red Rover was going with a Mercedes Diesel in a RR also. I don't expect a speed demon. I want a reliable diesel preferably an auto box, I don't do serious off roading, so if the manual will make the conversion less complicated and/or increase range, then I am ok with it.
I don't care much if the engine is British,German,American,Japanese etc. Whatever you think would be most reliable, cost effective and above all squeeze me past emissions and safety check..please
Thanks for any and all information.. all inputs welcomed.
