yea-ouch!

I like my truck, but not that much. :D

Think my cap on an engine swap is around $5K. That would put me in the ball park.

If I ever ran into a 5vz that needed replacing, I'd probably find a junkyard pull and just swap motors. There's a 101k mile motor from an '03 in NY for $1500 right now.

You can do a lot better rebuilding an engine. Besides, most believe that a used (what hotrodders called 'seasoned') block is better anyway. All the casting stresses are done stressing and the machining is going to leave a more consistent finished block.

I have been looking on CL over the years, have come close to buying one and just keep it as a spare stuck in the corner of the garage. Just never got around to doing it.

Need to go talk to some engine builders, I see a import engine shop pop up every once and awhile on the Boise CL.

I couldn't do a rebuild... would have parts left over with my absentee mind... ;)

Clutch lol, your funny!!! I have 4 jeeps one is a JKU fully modded ... It's a 2012 now has 74869 miles. Other then a battery and preventive maintenance it has not had an issue !!! I wasted my money buying the lifetime warranty ! My XJ has 148 miles on the beefed up 4.6 stroker and before that the 4.0 had 285k and going strong . The Two MJ's have 124k and the other had 197k before I elected to do a stroker in it also. It is now in a friend Cherokee doing great.
Some engines just keep on ticking .... Plus I have a soft spot for the bricks with wheels .

Funny lookin'!

Yeah, it is all how you treat them...anything will go the distance if you treat it right. Though my buddy had a XJ with 100K on it...that thing was falling apart (my Tacoma felt brand new in comparison) ...thank goodness his son rolled it and put it out of its' misery. ;) :D

Before I bought this Tacoma, I test drove about 10 Wranglers...every single of them felt really loose to me. One even broke down on a test drive. Always wanted a Jeep, but those Jeeps convinced me to stick with Toyota, couldn't pull the trigger.

Hoped that Toyota would reintroduce the 40's series in a modern context, but that never happened...and we got that bastardization of it with the FJ Cruiser.

I have a '95 T100, 134k with the 5VZ-FE. It was one owner, and garaged in the winter. I looked over it thoroughly before I bought it, and have all maintenance records. It's a great truck, and looks like it came out of the showroom. I didn't see the timing belt change in the records, so it's going to get one soon. I did remove the tape player, and replace it with the CD player from the same model year 4Runner. I feel like it's just barely breaking in. When I got it, I did all fluids and filters change and brakes as well. I just replaced the brake lines too, as one developed a small leak. Because of where I imported it to, I had to route the exhaust out of the back, instead of the factory location of the right rear. took that opportunity to replace the cat as I was throwing a code a while ago. Other than those relatively minor things, nothing.

Clutch what year Jk were you looking at? If it was pre 2012 your right on the money! Loose and under powered. Both a gear swap to 5:13 won't help along with a K&M . And a nice suspension change. And while your at it supercharge the thing and your good :)

If it helps, I was able to get my 5VZFE rebuilt, including a new crank (reconditioned one - mine was unusable) and a head for around $2,000 in Southern California about 2 years ago.

That does help, thanks. I am going to go talk to a couple local shops here soon.

Mine is still running pretty darn good, but the thought of "when is this thing going to go belly up???" does linger in the back of my mind.

I don't think you can base your engine condition assessment solely on mileage.

There's no reason it couldn't go another 100,000 miles. Or it could spin a bearing tomorrow. Even brand new engines have some that die early, so it's a matter of probability and statistics really. Most 5VZ engines last about 250K miles safely, but some go 500K and some go 50K. You just never know when there's a flaw in a casting, machine burr, the cascade of wear, whatever that will eventually take out the engine is going to happen.

All you can do is your best to maintain it and not worry. I would do a semi-complete assessment, run a series of compression checks, oil analysis, etc. Then watch and listen for changes.

Good advice. It doesn't burn oil, has plenty of power...no funny noises. I should do the oil analysis and comp check...might ease my mind. At 335K...definitely got my money out of it. After looking at new and used trucks...thinking my next goal is to see if I can get it to 500,000 miles. Just can't seem to open up the bank account for a new truck, they are nice and all, but...it isn't going to do anything that much different than what I already have. I look and look...and always come to the same conclusion.

Freshening up the whole under carriage made it feel tight again..breathed some life back into it.

You obviously shouldn't bury yourself in debt and chain yourself to a job to consume, consume, consume. But you only get one shot at this go 'round and if a new(er) truck works in those plans, then do it. If it's still the right tool, then don't change anything. But whichever it is then you just have to stop torturing yourself. Unless it's what makes you happy, then continue to obsess by all means. :)

My lovely wife always thought it was stupid that I name my truck (and bikes for that matter). It personalizes them too much to the point you can't see the reality. She thought I hung on to the truck a couple of years too long because I couldn't separate the history/experiences from the hunk of metal. I would look at it and see the busted knuckles, late night wrenching, the trail fixes and shared campsites with friends but couldn't see the duct tape and bailing wire, the rust, how worn out it was getting.

She was right, we're driving the heck out of this Taco. Did 24K miles so far in the 18 months we've owned it, got to Seattle, down to New Orleans, many MTB trails, camps and sights in between.
