Have a chance to trade for a 2001 xterra with 170 K. Too much? How are they with high mileage, I know nothing about them

1st gen Xterras are solid trucks, and can go a long, long way when maintained (timing chain!). Their Achilles heel is that the engine does not produce much power, unless you opt for the supercharged version.
2nd gen Xterras are very good trucks but you need to ensure that precautions have been taken to prevent the Strawberry Milkshake of Death - the mixing of coolant in the transmission as there is a poor design where an internal coolant line may crack and allow the mingling of fluids... I had this happen to my 2006 Xterra. It. can be expensive to fix, but the trucks are otherwise very solid platforms.

I sold my Xterra and got a Jeep JK Unlimited Rubicon, largely for the fun factor and aftermarket support.

The Nissan community is filled with helpful folks who are very approachable and willing to help out someone willing to learn.

Buy it, change all the fluids and filters, then go enjoy it. The motor is almost indestructible, the rest of it is pretty damn tough too.

The Gen 1s have a timing belt not chain that needs to be done every 90-100k. Valve cover gaskets usually need to be replaced around that time also. OEM Manifolds like to crack due to oil dripping on them from leaking valve cover gaskets. Knock sensor will go bad. Not a big deal for the N/A models. Very underrated off road ability.

If it's as reliable as my 2008 4.0L V6 Frontier has been, you're fine. I'm at 262k miles with no major issues, just wear and tear items and some CV axle shafts that I broke while offroading.
