High Mileage?

I had a d2 all 4 yrs of college, commuting everyday about 60 miles with it. It can be done, the only time it almost broke me is when gas hit $5. Find one that's been maintained like others have said and stay on top of it and you will have yourself a sweet, fun ride through school!:sombrero:

Ps: mine had 170 k miles when I sold it for my 04

Awesome man! Definitely looking for a good one like you said.

That's true about the fender flare! Hey, is it true that you can practically remove every body panel from a Discovery? Hence why that would be a different color?

Yes and no.

They do come apart easier than your typical modern unibody vehicle. But not as easily as a Defender which requires little more than a screwdriver. On the D2, some panels are fastened, some are welded, but all have tons of sealant gluing them together.

My point was that extreme field modification is easier on a D1 simply because there are fewer systems that are more flexible and more physical room to modify a 3.9/4.0 than a 4.6 should you need to. We can all agree that parts availavility isnt usually an issue.

Huh? How is there more room? You know the 4.6 is just a bored and stroked block right? The block itself is not bigger.

And assuming you are running the stock engine, why would anybody ever need to do extreme field modifications? Just buy the stock replacement parts.

Yes, it's harder to do engine swaps on a D2 due to the integrated electronics systems. But not insurmountable. And worst case, you end up with some systems not working (SLABS) which the D1 didn't even come with, so losing it in a D2 is hardly a problem.

Of course the block is the same size. I dunno, I feel like the ease of access in a D1 engine bay is more than a 4.6. (And I don't mean my 6.2, I had a '96 D1 w/3.9 as well). Could just be a "feeling" though :)

Found this interesting DII.

From CL:

2001 Land Rover Discovery II. needs work but runs, AC works great. the engine fires on all cylinders but can't accelerate to full throttle. Don't know if it is the fuel pump or electrical. I drive the car every day and it goes up to 70 miles per hour on highway. needs cosmetic plastics on front pillars, dash cracked and makes a squeek drom front driveline, don't know if it's a bearing or u-joint. interior in ok shape. great to fix up or lots of great parts, but you can drive it home today.
I tried to describe as good as I can, pictures coming soon. (wife is out with it now)

Guy says his Check Engine is on, as well as the 3 Amigos, throttle issue going on for 4 months. Dash lights are to prove that all lights work and none have undergone douchebaggery. He is asking $1500?

Unless you already have another daily driver, a pile of available cash, and lots of mechanical know-how, that is NOT the Disco you want. For everything you see there are probably two problems that you don't, pretty soon that $1500 truck has cost you more than simply buying a nice one. There is nothing worse than a neglected Land Rover.

Yeah, at that price, I'd have given it a shot too. Could get lucky and get it running right without too much work. Or, if it's a write-off, you could part it out and get your money back pretty easy.

Yea it was just a spur of the moment. Cheapest DII I have found, could have made a nice spare parts truck. :D

Doesn't it suck that when you casually look around craigslist and other places for Land Rovers there is an abundance of them, but when you are serious about buying one all of a sudden there are none or just crappy/overpriced ones? Must be one of Murphy's Law I guess.
