I'm taking up fly fishing this year and found some rivers that I need to hike in to get to. Looking for suggestions on what type of backpack to get.:camping:

Needs to carry 4 piece fly rod, Waders, 1 small box of flies, something to cook the fish on. sleeping bag and tarp or tent.

Its about a 3.5 mile hike-in to here:
We don't camp here, but I carry my regular dayhiking gear-(fleece, jacket,rainpants, hat, gloves, personal and misc. items) waders, boots, vest,rod & reel, tackle box, lunch, thermos, water. I use my regular backpacking pack -A Gregory Palisade- that is usually good for 3 to 4 day backpacks. The waders and boots easily exceed the weight and volume of a summer bag and tarp. Plus, they are even heavier hiking out wet. Just get any good pack with a comfortable suspension. You gotta try them on to get a good fit.

Some companies make backpacks for fly fishing. Here in Colorado I found my Dakine backpack works great. It is actually for backcountry skiing or snowboarding. It's got some great features to hold my net and rod case. Really any decent pack will do. It's more important to get a rod that packs down and to organize your gear taking just what you need. I usually don't even take waders when I go unless it's a really high altitude lake that requires being in the water to fish. The lighter you pack the easier the walk is. It also leaves more room for lunch and a couple of beers!

X2 on Dakine packs. I have a few of them that I use for skiing and climbing but they work great for fishing. They have a perfect number of attachment points that hold a fly rod perfectly. Here is a Dakine day pack and I also have a overnight or 2-3 day back country pack.
