Homemade Folding Table: My Versions

Mr. Stephens' thread on his wonderfully crafted cocktail table reminded me of the two tables that my father and I made nigh on ten years ago.

While they are not made of a fancy hardwood, nor encased in hand sewn canvas bags, they are self enclosed, rugged, and period correct(if you participate in certain reenactment groups).

The light colored table is white pine, and a bit heavier than the dark table made of redwood. With several layers of lacquer, both tables have held up extremely well through some pretty tought camping trips in the heat of the desert to the snow covered hunting spots of Northern AZ.

The two tables:

Everything fits into the table top itself:

Thanks for the kind words gents!

Building these is super easy, and would be a great father/son/daughter project for a weekend.

That's what I like about them..... Super simple!

I take it the pegs holding the crossbars are tapered?

These look very useful! It's easy to dimension them according to need as well. Some careful thought regarding choice of materials and a deft touch with the hole saw might make them quite a bit lighter, I think (for those of us not concerned with period correctness... :) )

Another Cool idea! Thanks for sharing Gavin. I like how these show there age without being too delicate. Great for the back of the truck or trailer. No custom bag needed, but I know were you could get one.

If one got creative they could make the space under the table the perfect size for a storage bin to slide in and out. This would keep those pesky camp squirrel from prying open the lid.

By the way could you give us the basic dimensions.

Thanks

I got to talking with my Dad about the tables, and we agreed that the darker of the two is about 14 years old, and the pine one is 11 years old or so.

We typically use the cross pieces as a place to set picnic baskets and things of that nature, and then cover the table with a large blanket if need be.(just in case the picnic baskets arent period, and we are at a period encampment.)

I can do better than basic dimensions, my Dad says he has file with dimensioned drawings of the tables, he just need to find it.

Those are some slick tables. I like the ingenuity of the Old World crafters.

Any progress on the plans from your dad?

My son has a complete wood shop, and this would be a great project for us to work on.:)

I'm trying to find the plans myself....if not, I'll just take some hard measurements.

The two of them went of to SCO for three weeks and Dad never got to looking for them, so bear with me.

Thank you for all the kind comments as well.
