Horseshoe Gulch/Fourmile Creek

I spent the weekend with family and friends up in South Park Colorado. Nothing extreme but it was a good time. With my wifes hectic schedule it was the only time she was able to make it out with us all year so I really enjoyed it. Anyway, we set up camp at Horseshoe Campground. Saturday morning was spent fishing for brookies and in the afternoon the wife and I drove up to the Peerless Mine, about 12,900 feet. Sunday morning we drove to the end of the road to the trail head for Mt. Sherman, 14,036 ft. We hiked up to the Hill Top Mine, about 13,000 ft. Since I had a few too many drinks the night before I decided to stop at this point and hang out with the wife and kids. We had one ambitous person that decided to hike the additional hour to the summit. We just relaxed and watched him the whole way. It was pretty neat to be able to see him go up. Maybe next year I'll do it. Well I can't seem to figure out how to post photos on this thread so I'll post a link to my site and you can view the pics.

very cool pics.

I was browsing some other photos on the site and the fly fishing caught my attention. I frequently get out alot here in AZ and have been up to CO a couple times near the Lake City/Gunnison area to fish.

What river is the cuttbow from? PM or email if you dont mind sharing. It looks like hike in. :ylsmoke: Very cool

That is one nice fish!

Scott -

Did you do the Mt. Shasta/Lake Como Trail while you were out that way this past summer??

I've always wanted to get up there, along with Holy Cross City. :smiley_drive:

Thanks for the comments. That fish was caught from the South Platte River in a section called Eleven Mile Canyon. It is just down stream from Eleven Mile Resevoir in the town of Lake George. That section is just off of Hwy 24 about an hour and 15 minutes from West of Colorado Springs. It is a beautiful canyon and you can actually drive to the end of it on a gravel road. There are actually two tunnels carved through the rocks that the road goes through. I'll have to get some more pics of it to show the beauty. I'll be doing my Fall overnight fishing trip the second week of October and I plan on going back there for a day. The other day will be spent a few miles upstream in a section call "The Dream Stream." It's probably one of the best tail water fisheries in the West. If you are ever up in these parts let me know and we'll try to hook up or I can at least fill you in on some good spots.

Very cool.

I have heard of the South Platte and Eleven Mile Canyon. My father has fished the area with a friend he knows that lives in South Park. Is this a tailwater below Eleven Mile Res.? Is it a hike in area or do you literally park right off the HWY?

Great info. I will have to read up some more on this area. I have had some great days in Colorado, more specifically on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison. I cannot wait to get back, hopefully next summer.

South Park and the surrounding area is unbelievable. There's so much good fishing, 4wheeling and other outdoor activities to do. That's why we've already bought our retirement/weekend property up there. Yes Eleven Mile Canyon starts directly below the Eleven Mile Dam. You can't get to it from the Resevoir though. The road into the Eleven Mile Canyon is just off the Hwy 24. It's a separate State Park from the Resevoir. There is a dirt road that parallels the river all the way up to the dam. I think there are 2-3 camp grounds in the Canyon as well. There are plenty of access points to the river just off of the road. Although some of them require a steep climb down the bank there is no hiking involved. For this reason it does get crowded on weekends. Unfortunately the popularity of fly fishing has exploded in the past 10 years and many of the rivers are crowded. For this reason I usually only fish on weekdays and have started hiking and 4wheeling into the smaller mountain lakes and streams to fish. However when I want to catch a large one I take a trip to a major river.
