I am curious if the DMV in CA registers these without going through hurdles or if something else is required. Do they have an issue with right hand steering, diesel engines, and grey market vehicles without US safety/emissions/etc. specs? If anybody here has experience with this, I (and I would bet others) would be curious to know.

Thanks Chip. I can see these 25+ YO trucks being pretty important for our community in the coming years. The mid-80s-mid-90s is really the golden years for simple expedition trucks, and now they can be imported and registered easily. I think we will set-up a way for these resellers to post diesel Land Cruiser, Defenders, etc.

Exciting times.

They are all 25 years or older and with the original drivetrain. Pretty easy to get registered and completely legal. It is 15 years in Canada, so the trucks are even nicer there.

The smog rules in CA can be an issue for vehicles built after 1973 - I know this has been an issue with ex-swiss army gasoline Pinzgauers - not sure how it would affect a diesel though...

The 25 year rule is for the Federal Government regarding importation only... I don't think the RHD is an issue at all.

I think being diesel is key, both for the CA emissions and for our interest/purposes. I cant imagine buying/importing a gasoline truck when I could buy something like this for $9k. High roof HJ61 - mmmmm.

As far as California emissions, it's 1976 and newer gasoline powered passenger cars and light trucks that have to pass muster at the smog nazi.. Diesels aren't an issue with emissions testing until after 1997 in passenger cars and light trucks.

I brought the issue of CA DMV up because I am familiar with the Pinzgauer and other ex-military vehicle problems for pre-1975 vehicles. I myself have a 1975 Volvo C303 that was no problem to register here in CA. My concern was that these are post-1975 and I wasn't sure if diesel engines would raise a red flag or not. If there is truly nothing to delay or hinder registration in CA, then I may start giving these vehicles a closer look. Does that also mean that I can start looking more closely at 25 year old european G-Wagens and bring one of these in without issues?

As I understand it, 25yo and older vehicles with a diesel is no problemo in in CA. In other states, even the gas motors are no issue.
