How rare is a 5spd disco?

Thank you for the advice. I thought they were harder to find than that.

I really don't mind buying a truck that needs work. My last purchase was a '98 cherokee that didn't run for $1,600. A few weekends in the garage, a used OME suspension, new BFG ATs and it has been going strong for 60K. For a total of about $3K I have a reliable expediton capable rig with no montly payment and only liability insurance.

I really like Land Rovers, but the cost of parts is what concerns me. I'd probably be better off looking for a cleaner model.

It really depends on what you want the vehicle to be in the end. However, you'll never build a Disco for what you can build an XJ- parts availability is the real key there. If we were on the other side of the pond, the roles would be reversed. I would certainly keep looking, even if you have to spend $1-2K more to get one in extremely good shape (like Scott did). in the end you'll have more money to outfit it as a proper expedition rig.

Well,

You seem to be getting a lot of banter about how bad Disco’s are, and all you asked was how rare a 5-speed Discovery is. Rare is obviously a matter of opinion. I don’t know what your opinion of rare is, but I’m pretty sure there are fewer 5-speed Discoveries in the US ten there are Defender 90’s. I searched a long time before finding a white SD in good condition back in 2000. It was a ’96 with about 40K miles on it. That being said, they are out there, but I have to imagine they are even harder to find nice examples of a 5-speed Discovery, eleven years after the last ones where imported (’97 was the last year for manual Discoverys). I wish I could find one as nice as Scott bought and built (let me know if it goes on the market Scott), but I think they are pretty rare finds these days.

All that being said, there were a lot of issues with the Discovery, as many have pointed out. And it seams that the build quality runs the gambit from POS to sterling. I’ve talked to as many Disco owners with 150-200K miles on theirs that think they are the greatest trucks, and that have had virtually no issues with them, as I have with people with 50K trucks that think they are the biggest POS ever built. So if you are concerned about dropping a lot of money into one after you buy it, join the club. Unfortunately I think it is much a crap shoot as anything, as to whether you will get a good one or not.

My 2 cents. The biggest issues to worry about are if the engine is experiencing a valve issue (’96-’99, earlier years the issue did not surface), and the main shaft spline wear issue. The only way to properly diagnose this is to pull the PTO cover of the t-case and pull the input gear to check the condition of the splines. If it doesn’t have a cross drilled gear, replace it with one, and keep the t-case a tad bit overfilled.

search for "discovery 5-speed site:craigslist.org" on Google

Many of the resulting hits are expired or sold, but the listings
near the top should still be good. For example, a search today
found one in Philadelphia, $3500.

My expedition green '97 D1 has been a joy to own.
I did have a plain white '95 that I suspect was on its way to giving me daily headaches but it died a gruesome death before it ever got that far.

That's funny.

I went to SAE a few weeks ago and one guy that works for a dealer couldn't believe that I had a 97 5spd discovery. If you are looking for one I may be selling mine soon if I get another. It does need some work but will include a lift and snorkel and is fully loaded.

I'm certain I've seen the production statistics for 5-speed discos somewhere in the past. I thought it was on Fourfold.org but a quick perusal this morning and I could not find it....

I looked for mine (bought 6 years ago now) for about 2 years, and lo and behold I found 2 within the same week! go figure.

they are still out there. 94/95 have the 3.9, and 96/97 the 4.0

good luck!

D1s have terrible valves, electrical problems, bad door handles in winter or when they rust at all, leaky roofs, the hazards come on when you hit a bump hard and you have to pull the fuse and replace it, roof rust with anything that has had a roof rack on it, they have been known to arbitrarily blow out the rear window, the spare tire often pulls the OEM hanger off, and some always sag from one side or the other for no apparent reason. Fog lights and rear fog lights are replaced constantly, etc

Just keep these posts coming Z O O R O P A, please. So I can keep buying these great trucks so cheap!

Thanks,

David

My '97 Rioja Red 5 speed has been quite reliable. ~100K, all on synthetic oil. - no valve jobs - no fuel pump woes, PS box & pump still going - no sunroof to leak. LR electrical manuals are devilishly long & debug can be a bear if the electric gremlins accumulate.

Repairs over 14 years are limited to well known items, in this order
- VSS
- water pump gasket/timing cover
- Tensioner bearing 'sing' on shutdown.
- 2 window regulator wheels.
- wiper-parking relay
- rear trailing arm bushings
- just replaced front crank seal

That said, on desert trips, there is a 1610 pelican case full of parts: full set of hoses, fluids, fanbelt, ODB-2 scanner, PS hoses, fuel pump & MF relay, CKPS, spare relays, expansion tank & caps, hub socket, wheel bearings, u-joints.

'97 D1 - modded with 3-4" lift, ARBs and GBR gears & axle parts.

Just get the truck you want. If your spending to much on upkeep then get rid of it. When I got my '95 it was in less than good shape I just fixed what I could when I could. Dont over think it.

While not rare in the sense that you will never find one... compare the number of 5spd Discos to the number of automatic Discos you can find in a search.

I did an autotrader search just now, any distance from my area code. 827 Listings for Land Rover Discovery, only 4 with Manual Transmission. About 1 in 200. Of course there are variables to account for, I didnt check through all 827 and verify through interior pictures that they were indeed labled correctly. etc.
