I really don't mind buying a truck that needs work. My last purchase was a '98 cherokee that didn't run for $1,600. A few weekends in the garage, a used OME suspension, new BFG ATs and it has been going strong for 60K. For a total of about $3K I have a reliable expediton capable rig with no montly payment and only liability insurance.
I really like Land Rovers, but the cost of parts is what concerns me. I'd probably be better off looking for a cleaner model.
It really depends on what you want the vehicle to be in the end. However, you'll never build a Disco for what you can build an XJ- parts availability is the real key there. If we were on the other side of the pond, the roles would be reversed. I would certainly keep looking, even if you have to spend $1-2K more to get one in extremely good shape (like Scott did). in the end you'll have more money to outfit it as a proper expedition rig.
