How to build your own mufflers...

So this morning I take my little mufflers to Ed Hansons Exhaust shop and guess what he has... Yep a differential flow meter just like what NTSQD drew up. Well I had to find out how it flowed and I must admit I was very curious. They pulled a 4 chamber Flowmaster off the shelf and put it on the pedestal and flipped the switch. The green liquid went up to 5.5 inches of water. Then I threw mine on, to my surprise it read 6 then settled down to 5.5. Perfect... Flows as well as the flowmaster and quieter. :victory::smiley_drive::wings:

I will swing back buy there with a camera next week and duplicate the test so that I have visual proof! Ill post um up.

Very nice!

It's empty inside? I mean, did you put some rock wool inside or something?

We made a circular one for my mate (He has a 3.0TD 4Runner as mine) but it makes too much noise for my taste, but only did chambers with a big hole in the middle...

Cheers,

David

David it is just the metal baffles. No wool or anything else.

Back at it being they were too big to fit where I wanted them.
After some playing around with size, flow, sound, and shapes the winner is the little triangle shaped guys. Piece of Pie.

Its already spoken for... Sorry

Figured it couldn't hurt to ask!:snorkel:

Thanks for the write up! I need to do something with my CJ.

I can move my skid plate up tight to the frame, once I figure out the muffler problem.

I do believe I can fab a thinner muffler using the technique you did.

Having the bottom of the CJ completely flat across the lower frame rails, will really improve clearance, sliding over obstacles, and break over angle.

It's flat now, but hangs down 2" below the frame, becuase of the exhuast.

Time for another project this winter!:coffeedrink:

I wouldn't hesitate on that project at all. You will be amazed at much quieter it will be than you expected. All the mufflers I have built have been much quieter than I had anticipated. If your not going to use the one you have on it now open it up see how its made and just down size everything inside of it to a size that works for you. Go for it. I started installing mine tonight... really happy with how they tuck up high.

Tools...?

So how do you work the slip-fit pipe? I tried using one of those junky exhaust expanders available at (yeah, I know. It was an experiment) HarborFreight to make the tubing slip together and it didn't work. Did you just butt jion your tubing? Curious..

There are no slip fits yet... They are one piece so far. I used u bends and straight lengths for the exhaust. those are welds you see.
