How to hydro-lock an XJ!

i don't get it...
the water is very shallow! he was going a bit too fast, but that shouldn't matter water-wise.
i've been in much deeper water with it spilling over the top of the hood. slow constant speed is the key. as long as there is a wake it will stay out of the air box...
bad pic, but the only one i have in water without a snorkel...

even going fast through a shallow puddle (that i also checked before going through) didn't do any harm...

I think in his case (subject of OP) it was a matter of bad luck combined with too much speed. I'd be interested to know if that Jeep was still equipped with the rubber splash gaurd and/or the OEM ChryCo skid plate in the front as well.

Must be a Jeep thing..I guess I wouldn't understand.

You know I'm just teasin', makes a good case for a snorkel on any truck.

Perhaps being at stock height contributed to the event. This is just after the big splash starts to subside and you can see there's pretty much a solid wave of water up above the hood. At stock height plus the speed caused the front air dam and bumper to shovel up a wall of water high enough and solid enough to flood the intake.

If it had been lifted some amount it might just have made a splash like some of the other pics in the thread. Or had gone slower.

I feel your pain as well. I had a similar experience with a new Howell TBI'd 4.2L in a YJ I owned once upon a time. One of the first mods after lifting the "replacement Jeep," aka our current XJ was a Safari Snorkel.

XXXpedition, you may notice the scenery as this was taken at one of the many water crossings on the way back from the Knik Glacier near Palmer & Wasilla, AK.

Too much speed......

This picture might better represent just how high the water went. His entry started the frontal wave, which he should have followed at a slower speed instead of colliding with it.

He is checking out his insurance to see if it might cover the loss.....more later.

Thanks,
