How to make the "degrees" symbol

I was transposing GPS coordinates the other day and I realized I didn't know how to make the degrees symbol using a standard keyboard. I found it and I thought I'd pass along the info.

Make sure the number lock is engaged

Press Alt and 0176...and you get this ° !

Thanks for the info. Always wondered how to do that.

I keep a whole list of these and use them a lot more than one might think. They're useful for ensuring hard formatting is preserved, and keep line spacing consistent.

ALT+[0128] = €
ALT+[0153] = ™
ALT+[0174] = ®
ALT+[0176] = °
ALT+[0177] = ±
ALT+[0178] = ²
ALT+[0179] = ³
ALT+[0181] = µ (for dimensions like thousandth of mm, µm, micrometer)
ALT+[0183] = · (centered dot -- for things like torque, in lb·ft or kg·m))
ALT+[0188] = ¼
ALT+[0189] = ½
ALT+[0228] = ä
ALT+[0246] = ö
ALT+[0252] = ü

How odd.
I just type Option-k on my Mac to get ˚
Option-g to get ©
Option-r to get ®
etc...
I have a dashboard widget that shows any that I need to look up...

Yes, it is interesting to see how it's done on equipment that's outside the mainstream. :sombrero:

I was about to say you were wrong, but then I realized that my keyboard was set to the spanish layout, so I switched back to the US layout and it works. Option-8 is the keystroke in the spanish keyboard.

For Windows users, the program Character Map provides a nice pick list for each installed font. It also shows the Alt key stroke if available.

charmap.exe or Start->All Programs -> Accessories->System Tools. (That's for windows XP.)

Since extended characters don't display properly in certain email
programs and web site posts, people use the asterisk to substitute
for the degree mark, as in "Draw a 90* angle."

Kind of ugly, but most people understand what's intended.
