My buddy Jim and I packed up our trucks (G-Wagen & Jeep JK) for a bit of fun on our way to the Horizon's Unlimited gathering in Annapolis Royal. Sounded like a fun weekend until we saw the track for hurricane Arthur heading right for Nova Scotia. Luckily, it was supposed to peter out before it got to us so off we went.
First stop was Indian Hill Camp on Panuke Lake. A really nice spot if you don't mind a bit of "pin striping" on the way in.
We were using our cots and 1-man tents as there is very little level ground and it made set-up and knock-down a breeze.
From here we headed north to 5-Mile lake through a series of abandoned logging tracks
We then carried on to Annapolis Royal for the HU event. Knowing that it was going to be an interesting 24hrs, we set up my big XWT from Cabellas. This thing is a beast but it is really solid in any kind of weather. Once the tent was up we got down to a big feed and a few cocktails.
The motorcyclists were more than a bit envious of our set-up as most of them were getting along with a small tent and a change of clothes.
What was left of Arthur brought 138km/hr winds and a good ********** of rain. Mostly it was 40-50km/hr with gust to 70km/hr. When the storm hit, things happened pretty quickly, the power went out, a LOT of tents came down and people started moving into the basement of the event hosts ... the 74th Crusaders Motorcycle Club/. These guys were great. They set up an area for people to sleep and made every effort to keep the event moving along. They set up a generator for the presentations and had candles & lamps for lighting in the evening.
We did just fine although the dog did get kinda wet.
The next day the storm had passed, the bikes packed up and started to head out.
We let the tent dry out then headed out past Kejimkujik and stopped at the LaHave Bakery before taking the ferry across the LaHave river.
A sweet little trip with a bit of adventure.
All the best,
John & "the Bad Dog"
