My friend saw this truck by the beach at Crissy Field yesterday...did not get the chance to talk to the owner(s).

That would be my dream camper.

I like the size of that rig, and I love the 70-series trucks, but wouldn't that be a lot of weight for that chassis/engine?

You should see what tradesmen in OZ load them down with. I had our stacked with nearly 2 cords of wood at one point. They're tough trucks to say the least.

Question?: IS that in fact a 78? I thought 78's were the new front end style 70 series. That would be about the perfect truck if it had the 4.5 TD V-8.

Cheers

78 and 79 series have been built with the traditional exposed fenders and five bolt pattern wheels since 98 (when the 100 series came out) Now (2007) with the advent of the V8 diesel they have needed to widen the frame and put a more traditional looking fender to make it fit. They are still selling them with 1HZ engines as well in some places (Canadian mines for example)

They are capable of pretty heavy use.

There is this HDJ81 Camper for sale by Outback: http://www.outbackimports.ca/landcruiser.php#HD-2963. Not sure if the 1HDT is up to all that weight or the higher centre of gravity on that wheel base. Its been listed by them for a while so maybe others have thought the same. A 6 track mod with an Alaska type camper would be more stable.

In many countries the 1-HDT is used in Toyota Coaster buses. I see them frequently loaded with more than a dozen people and a lot of luggage. They pull fine on the highway.

My main concern was with stability and weight for the drive train and suspension. But yes, the engine does worry me. Nissan also uses the naturally aspirated TD4.2 on their buses and dump trucks. But it isn't what I would want for the power plant with that much weight for a long expedition. Also, I am still reading about concerns with the BEB on the 1HDT. Some people are even saying to change them every 100,000 kms. Not sure why they would need it when changed once they have been done a first time. In comparision, the 1HZ is recognized as being more dependable. Besides not having a turbo, I beleive it is also indirect injected.

Guess who I ran into today? On my way to pick up my wife from the San Francisco airport, I saw this awesome looking camper on the freeway. Which is funny because I just saw it on the Expo this afternoon. So I followed the lumbering vehicle, say about 55-60 mph, which was slow as I was blazing by at 70-75 mph. Lets not forget I was late to pick up my wife. I was able to determine his exit by his turn signal, thank God for courteous drivers. I followed him to his evening camp sight where I pulled up and spoke with him for a moment. He and his wife are from Holland and have been on the road since 2004. The camper was created on a long wheel base 70 series pick up by he and his buddy. His buddy now builds these rigs in Germany and I have his info if your interested in finding out more. They are on their way north to Alaska after a long drive from Argentina and I’m sure he has stories galore but I couldn’t leave my bride hanging any longer. So off I went. Here are a couple photos from my high tech Treo cell phone.

By the way, he was a real nice fella.

Owner of the HZJ 78 camper

Hello,
My camper you have seen is based on a HZJ 79 Pick-up, 6 cylinder diesel engine. year 2000. I bought it over gray import in Germany. Allthough there are problems to sell them in Europe because of emmision standards, there is a company in Germany who managed to match the standards with a few modifications.
I would like to refer to www.tourfactory.de . The site is in german, but clicking on Katalog and it will give you an impression of their busness.
My wife and I are traveling since oktober 2004 from Argentina to Alaska. No major problems with the Toyota. (we don't have a website)

Hi Klaas,

Do you have any other pictures of your vehicle or your travels? You've been out there since 2004 so I'm sure you have many stories to tell. You don't need your own website when you have this site to share! :) Welcome to the ExPo.
