I did my own hood blackout.

Hi folks Well after seeing various hood blackouts but not many on green Discoveries I decided to do my own. Saturday the 14th. I pulled out the painting tape went to the hardware store bought two cans of rustoleum. THe whole job took about 45 minutes to ensure a very clean cut blackout. I used flat black instead of gloss because of the sun glare. I am very pleased with the outcome while it is not as clean and cool as a "decal" none the less it does serve it's purpose very well and at 8.95$ for paint and 45 minutes of time that's not a bad deal.:ylsmoke:
heres some pictures.

Thanks. I was going to pucker up 45$ for a decal one but seeing that I could save money I just went ahead and did it.

even my mom likes it. and her land rover is straight up a mall/and dinner crawler.:yikes:

The decal is not all what it made out to be. There is glare with the decal. I can see you being able to control the glare better with paint. The only cool thing with a decal I have noticed is when you have a engine fire, it glows and then flares up a pretty blue.

I was waiting for a post on this. Griots Garage offers a spray on rock chip bug bra. They mention you can also apply it to other things like interior of a boat bla bla bla. The kicker is that it removable , yes thats right removable. You can take it off after a trip or whatever. http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?&SKU=20264 I was thinking I could spray my lower door panels center of hood, whatever.

RE: Griot's Spray on Bra

I did a lot of web searching. Oddly enough, the Volvo guys hate it (but haven't really tried it) the Beemer guys love it and the Lotus guys won't pony up to try it.

The Beemer forums said it works as advertized. I'm going to give it a shot. I have a silver Disco and the hood would look nice blacked out and it sure does reflect the light.

That it did when I was about 300 miles in Mexico coming home after being gone for a month.

Well I figured for those of use who would like a reversible hood job this might be a good option. I have a Silver 4runner sometime I wish I would have tinted the windshield.
