I flipped my M416

FWIW I believe the manual for those things says the trailer should have a 60/40 split for the wieght over the axle. They aren't meant to be loaded then attached by hand either, at least not without using the jack. With the shorter trailers you need more tongue wieght than a longer one. Did you notice any fishtailing with the trailer at all?

No fishtailing. It was 120 lbs lighter with 15 less gallons of water on board. Tongue weight is at least 60 + lbs.

I am wondering if the tires I am runnning are not giving me the flex I need . I have LT215/85/16 tires that are load range D. I am thinking that since these tires are designed for a heavy landed truck they are not the best choice for this trailer.

ya that and tire pressure ?i would think ...the tires on the trailer would soften the bounce ?just thinking as i just got a trailer so really want to understand what happened ?we always deflate the tires in the truck as to make the ride softer ,mabye the trailer needs the same comfort ?just a thought ...j

Not true on the tongue weight, mine has less than 100 pounds and can be towed at 100 mph. It is where it tips that matters, you can hold mine with two fingers at 23-25 degrees.. Designing the trailer to work around the hard items that do not change is the key, keeping water and liquids at axle heigth makes a lot of difference. The key to towing a trailer at high speed with correct tongue weight is to lower the front of the trailer 2 inches below the rear, it changes the trailer completely.

Still think this was more to do with something seizing up than trail conditions or suspension causing it. And you should lower the trailer tire preasure to remove the bounce. I very seldom run mine above 25 pounds and go down to 12 to 15 on serious trails.

25 lbs towing on the freeway? What size tires are you running?

The trailer tires were aired down to 25psi and had a good sidewall bulge. But with such a heavy duty tire, I doubt the sidewall has the same flex as a regular tire.

35's and they show no wear, the trailers weigh less than half of the recommended weight. I do sometimes raise it to 40 if nothing but freeway driving for like a trip to Colorado but it really is not necessary I have found other than may help the mileage a scosch. I have been towing and building trailers for over 40 years and that is what I have found to work best for me. Others have different ideas. But ask oneleglance about my trailer and how easy it is to lift, he saw it. Said I should do a video on it, no one would believe it. Some trailers are exceptions, due to the placement of certain items in the trailer, but I always try to center the water over the axle and just above it. My batteries set right on top of the axle, keeping the center of gravity very low. You can watch a video of it on Carvacer Trail on my website, and notice that it does not leave the ground on any of the twists.

I run a torsion axle and that allows for less tire preasure or requires it, however you want to look at it. lol

I think I need a bigger truck!
I had E rated tires on my trailer when I got it, same size as yours... airing them down didn't seem to make much difference with the stiff sidewall? On road they were ok, never took them offroad however. I popped a set of 31x10.5x15" BFG AT's and I usually have them at around 20 PSI ish. On road they track great and between the lower pressure and the shocks they track amazingly over bumps/stutter bumps. May still pop out a leaf or two if need be. Offroad I am told I should lower them to 10 ish or less PSI...depending on load I suppose?

Oh and I have them on wheels with less backspace too, so it has a slightly wider track now over stock. Hopefully all that and plus a coupler will stop a flip in my future.

What wheels do you use on your trailer? That tire size would be great.

I swapped out my drums (I have a CDN M101) with some matching bolt pattern wheels, and popped on a set of Allied Wheel Components Soft 8 steel wheels.

Here is a pic of it with the new lid on it (well most of the new lid fitted on it) the drums and the wheel/tires. Wheels were cheap, like $48.00 from JC Whitney. Hubs were about $50.00 each locally from Princess Auto (Canada only) and were a direct fit/swap. I think the hub size on the M416 is larger, but there are options for different drums available online. Will see if I can find those links, all were in the US?

I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on the cause of the flip but it did make me nervous since I have an M416 with a springover and a RTT. My RTT is only 5" above the 6" lid but still........

I went out to the garage last night and tried to turn the lunette by hand----no luck. When I put a 3' board in it for leverage it turned but slow and stiff. I am going to pull mine apart, mirror polish both tapers and put a whole bunch more grease in there!!
