I'd suggest you try the demo of Lightroom. You'll probably get hooked. And I don't know if you are still in academia, but Adobe offers some of the most awesome academic discounts. IIRC, there are both generic student/staff licenses, as well as licenses specific to the various academic institutions.
If you go deeply into photography, as a pro or amateur, Lightroom will be helpful. Even the rankest amateurs who never even crop their photos can benefit from it. These days everyone takes so many shots a program like LR is invaluable. And if you wanna edit, the number of tools it has available grows and grows. It seems to me that these days Photoshop and even Elements to a degree are gravitating to the end of the scale where people are starting with a photo and doing a lot of graphics work, like ad design or whatever. Those who are mostly about developing RAW images, using filters, and essentially focusing just on the photo can now do so without having to leave LR that often, especially if you get some add-ons. I especially love the Nik Software package, now offered by Google. All run as plugins in LR. Silver eFex is especially great if you like B&W.
And I also like Elements as well. I had to finally scan a bunch of old photos and slides, and it was actually easier and faster in Elements than in CS6 Photoshop. It's a powerful program.
