I think I just scored at the junkyard, have a couple questions.

I went to the U-pull-it today, since the wife allowed a few hours of "me" time. I'm walking throught the yard with only the intention of finding the remaining parts for my rear disc swap.

I ended up seeing a TJ their which is rare, so I took a closer look and it is a 4 cyl. I seem to remember 4cyl either having 3.73 or 4.10 gearing. I check the diff tags and it says 4 10, and a few other numbers. Check the rear, and it says 4 11 and a few numbers. So I proceeded to pull the front Dana 30 to swap into my cherokee.

I go to the checkout and am a little worried the guy is going to charge me for all the steering, control arms, and trackbar I'd left on it. Bolts were too stuck to remove. I also have a wheelbarrow full of my disc brake parts, some wiring odds and ends, and a few other items.

He rings it up as a car rear axle (fixed pricing place), and charges me $86 for the whole works.

So I'm pumped and will be ordering a matching 8.25 rear OEM axle with 4.10 and trac-loc for $1,200. Bearing is going on my 8.25 and I have a busted off lower shock mount.

Is their any swap issues from TJ to XJ? Is this a low pinion or something not ideal, not sure it matters since I'll never be higher than 2".

Thanks,
Troy

Your new TJ D30 is low pinion where as the one you're removing from the 98 XJ is a high pinion. That alone is not a worry, 2000-01 XJs came with low pinion D30s. Since you are staying mild on the lift there should be no issue. Out of curiosity what size tires will you be using?

Interestingly enough you will have no problem finding a TJ guy who wants your high pinion axle. They are somewhat popular with some TJ guys. Selling it would off set the cost of your project a bit.

I agree with everyone else, sounds like a score to me. $86 is way better than the $500 or $600 it would take to re-gear the front axle.

have you considered an 8.8 out of an explorer for the rear? they are easy to find, cheap, and have disc brakes. i just put one in my buddies cherokee, though it was leaf sprung. i don't know how hard it would be to 4 link

edit : never mind i see you have a cherokee. perches are easy to set up

Does your wife know you scored at the junkyard? She's not going to give you "me time" again.

When I pulled up with the axle and all it's attachments on the trailer, plus me covered in grease, she was entertaining her friend. Neither of them was too impressed. Her friend was showing off her new Audi S4 wagon, so you get the picture of the type of girl this was. I'm sure she felt sorry for my wife with her hillbilly husband. No offense to the hillbilly's on the board.

I'm still thinking about it. I like the idea of a completely new axle with gearing, brakes, and trac-loc for $1,200. It is minor , but I think you also need spacers or more backspacing on the wheels to run the 8.8. I have stock Rubicon wheels and 255/70/16 BFGs at the moment. I could be swayed either way.

Are you looking at the deal on the rear axle from a vendor? I think it was Jeeps R Us or something like that, that sold new 8.25, drum to drum with 4.10's and trac-loc for about $1200. If so, that is what I bought 4 years ago. It worked great and bolted right in. Used my original e-brake cables.

Knowing what I know now, I think I would have gone with an 8.8 rear end with the Super 8.8 kit. That kit adds new c-clip eliminator adapters and axles, which once installed adds 1.5" to the overall width, which puts the width back to a stock XJ rear end. In the end you have a much stronger rear end/axles and no c-clips to break. If you were picking up an 8.25 with 4.10's cheap, I wouldn't hesitate to use it but at the cost of the new rear end, the 8.8 is a better choice, IMHO. Side benefit is you get disc brakes without having to spend money on a ZJ disc/aftermarket swap.

Nice score on the front axle. My '00 is a low pinion and with 3" of lift, no issues.

If you are comfortable pulling a front axle then go get another ChryCo rear axle for $86, order a ring and pinion and setup kit and hire someone to do the re-gear. It'll be a lot less than $1200...

I second that! (Could even have them throw a locker in there while doing it for less!)

But why go through the trouble messing with that 8.25 when you could throw a Ford 8.8 under there?

Some 8.8 axles had 4.10 gears which would match your front. Just weld some new perches/shock tabs and bolt it on. The axle's width is only about 5/8" shorter on each side than a stock width Cherokee/Wrangler axle so no worries there, won't be noticeable. PLUS you get disc brakes in the rear

Just my 2 cents is all.

I Have an 8.8 in my garage right now that I'll have swapped in by the end of summer. I'm rebuilding an NP231 at the moment and preparing to swap in an AX15 I just finished rebuilding, so the 8.8 will have to wait.

(Of course, I currently have a D35 under the rig now so I have more of a reason to do this than you XJ folks with the 8.25)

Just picked up a 8.25 drum to drum for 100.00 this weekend. I know you can pick one up for 86.00 but I picked this one up off craigslist. Didnt have to turn a wrench to bring it home.

I've had two guys post on a local forum that they want complete HP30s that they plan to re-gear for their TJs. What is a reasonalbe amount to ask for my complete D30? Rotor to Rotor with steering and control arms. I'm not looking to gouge anyone. Is is $50, $100, $250?

Thanks,
Troy

Well, I'm currently trying to work on a deal with a guy across the country that is selling his D30 and 8.25 combo, both with 4.56's and Detroits.
He's asking $1000.00.
I kind of thought that deal was ok, especially when re-gearign my own axles would cost around $2000.00 for a local shop to do it for me.

Swapping the axles I could do myself, no labour spent on that.

EDIT: I wish I could better deals like some of you guys!
