I would... but I won't.

Ha a rack is a whole lot cheaper then a truck! if you can't afford to pay cash for it then don't do it. You have perfectly good platform in the cherokee. The 4.0 is a great motor and by adding a nice rack or cargo box to the roof you should be able to fit the family and all your gear in it.

....beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice.”

Dude, don't make me get all Yoda on you....

Don't do it, Chris. Though Tacos are sweet rigs, why take on more debt? Are on your way to getting your current ride paid off or is it paid off already? Your rig is one of the classiest rigs on this site and is the envy of many a forum member. How much do you need a truck for? Is it worth it to have to buy new stuff (armor, bumper, cap or cover, rack) to outfit your truck? Though your Xj might be loaded on a trip, it'll all still fit won't it? How often are you really gonna need the extra room? Those are questions you have to ask yourself.

Let not your heart be troubled, though that taco might be giving you that come hither look, trust in your fiscal conservatism and get thee hence from car lots of ill repute. OUT! OUT! Foul demon! Thy name is Toyota!:violent-smiley-031:

x2. Don't do it. It's just not worth adding the extra debt. Trucks will come and go and when you're in a better financial state, there will be more Tacoma's to look for. If anything, save a couple of hundred bucks and buy one of those trailers from Harbor Freight, build a box and then you'll solve your lack of space in your XJ.

BTW, I remember you (Chris) from waaaay back in the Rockcrawler.com days. You've always had nice Jeeps.

:Wow1: I normally don't look at Tacomas, so I might be way off base, but is that price reasonable for year and mileage??? It seems a little steep to me. What would that puppy have run new?

I'm not up on the current values not being in the market, but they hold their value astonishingly. Even better than 4runners.
I bought a new tacoma prerunner 2wd in 99 for 20999. I sold it with 95k miles and lots of offroading scars (with lots of offroad mods that didn't add a penny in value) for what all of the same year make and model trucks were currently going for in the autotrader. That was in early 06 or late 05. It went for 15,900. I was happy with that depreciation.

Thought I saw an XJ with WJ split bench conversion in the back somewhere.

X2, if cargo space is the only problem, use your imagination. A split bench seat or even bucket seat conversion would be very inexpensive. If you don't have one already, you could purchase a roof top tent as well, they save a lot of space. A cargo rack would fit on the roof with the Roof Top Tent. All problems solved. If you love your vehicle, your imagination is your only limitation.

I am a Toyota guy myself, but that Cherokee will suit your needs if you want it to.

This is sad...

Here Chris is contemplating giving up his Jeep for a stock Tacoma, and here I am thinking how much I'd consider giving up my stock-ish Tacoma for a Jeep outfitted like Chris's...

No, not really contemplating per se, just sharing a passing fancy. In a perfect world, I'd have my cake and eat it too. ;)

Chris,

Keep the jeep, get creative and make it work... I just realized you have been hanging out at car lots quite a bit.

Knock it off!
