Idaho...A place to roam and explore!

My family and I just completed an eight-day visit to Idaho. Our plan was really...well, no plan! We brought the bikes, fly rods, and a few books to read. Idaho is a such a magical place. Whether on foot, bike, or vechicle, there are so many places to explore. And, water!!!! The fly fishin is beautiful.

idaho-2012 010.jpg

So many wide-open spaces and places!

idaho-2012 007.jpg

Lilly was ready to fish...Will have to remind her that the fish are NOT up in the sky...We were camped off of Trail Creek. Sun Valley has some tremendous singletrack! Corral Creek, Adams Gulch, Lake Creek...Didn't have the camera. I was breathin too hard on my single speed!

idaho-2012 027.jpg

Lilly just wanted to make bubbles:)

idaho-2012 019.jpg

Fishin on the Big Wood is a real treat. Easy access...Great water...and, the fish like to bite!

idaho-2012 049.jpg

We headed north and came to the Yankee Fork Drainage out of Sunbeam. There is a old dredge there that the Forest Service now owns. Great tour...The dredge moved about a mile a year...for about a total of 6 miles of dredging for gold. At the time, the gold was regulated by the US. Imagine...$34 an ounce...It is worth the tour!

idaho-2012 034.jpg

Old ghost, mining towns dot the area!. It is fun to see and walk around the old buildings. This was a quick shot of Bonanza City. This town was closest to the dredge.

idaho-2012 067.jpg

No firebans in Idaho! It was cool in the morning. Coffee and a fire...What else does one need?

idaho-2012 065.jpg

Lilly just wanted to ride the double track!

idaho-2012 082.jpg

Hikes and exploration are all over the place...People? Not so much...didn't see anyone for a few days...

idaho-2012 094.jpg

On the way back to our campsite...I noticed what appeared to be a really nice fishing hole. The water looked deep...it had potential. I told my wife she should throw her line in...She used to be a fly fishing guide...she knew what to do...Minutes later, she hooked a trophy rainbow out of the river. Red, pink belly, sparklin...After a few pictures, we put the fish back to fight another day!

More to come...

I have an uncle who remembers actually seeing the Yankee Fork dredge in action when he was a kid. He said the the most memorable aspect was that it was incredibly, horribly, terrifyingly, LOUD as it chewed its way down the valley.

You were touring right where I live. By the way, Park City is a pretty great spot also.

Yes, can't complain much about Park City...Centrally located to many great spots...Like Idaho:)

That dredge is amazing...our tour guide said it was very loud...amazing how much rock they dredged through...

Lilly got used to the Solar Shower...A nice way to end the day!

We drove into Custer, Idaho. A ghost town which was named after the famous general who lost his life in his last stand! Many buidlings remain. The place is managed by the forest service and Idaho state parks. The individual sites were numbered and information was given about each one.

idaho-2012 156.jpg

Many old houses to walk through...Nicely kept up!

Saloon? No...Turned into a gift shop:(

idaho-2012 166.jpg

Saw some newspapers tacked to the wall for help with insulation. The author of this article; caught my eye...Amazing!

We toured the cemetery. It was a interesting to see so many people die due to snowslides...Custer sits in a steep-walled valley. Slides happened on a regular basis.

Redfish Lake is gorgeous! Nice swimming and sunny spot!

idaho-2012 229.jpg

Views everywhere...It reminded me of the Tetons!

idaho-2012 253.jpg

Found a wonderful campsite...

It was time to wet the fly...

We spent 2 weeks in Idaho last year primarily in the central and south regions focusing on the Oregon trail with numerous side trips - great scenery and fascinating history.

Lilly of course wanted to use the fly rod rather than her special Barbie rod she had...Louise's setup is quite expensive, so she cautiously let her throw the fly around in the water. The water was crystal clear...We thought there was no chance she would check one. We were wrong! She caught 4!!!

idaho-2012 296.jpg

She was very proud of herself. My wife and I were both stunned!!!

idaho-2012 328.jpg

Later that evening...We broke out the harmonicas! Glad no one else was around. It was jam session time!!!!

idaho-2012 347.jpg

The next morning; we packed up and searched for hotsprings. This one had enough water spilling out of the hillside...

idaho-2012 343.jpg

Didn't seem to be too many people around...

idaho-2012 366.jpg

We found a nice place on the South Fork of the Boise River. Lilly enjoyed doing dishes...Can't complain about that...

idaho-2012 383.jpg

We rallied down the road watching for traffic...There was none!

idaho-2012 370.jpg

Nothing like this hotspring...Someone has logged it up...Perfect temp! Enjoyin...

idaho-2012 381.jpg

Big fan of mother nature...I wish we had a few of these in Utah! Outstanding!

Final installment coming...Revenge of the Barbie Rod!!!!

Lilly and I were soaking in the hotsprings...Louise spotted some fish on the other side of road along the creek...She had just put her fly rod away, so she said she was going to tie a fly on the line of the Barbie Rod...Add a slip weight...

idaho-2012 428.jpg

As soon the fly hit the water...it was game on!!!

idaho-2012 376.jpg

Louise was excited. I thought all the other fish would be spooked away! I was wrong...

idaho-2012 396.jpg

All the trout were big...none were spooked. Louise had caught/released ten or twelve when Lilly decided she wanted to fish!

idaho-2012 414.jpg

Barbie Rod in full effect!

idaho-2012 396.jpg

idaho-2012 395.jpg

We found out they were Bull Trout. Not sure what the hell a Bull Trout is but...They fought! We literally caught 15 fish all 14 inches or more...

idaho-2012 444.jpg

All good things have to come to an end...Our road home!
