Example #1:

Buy rust free clean 80-series, only care about body, frame, axles and interior: $4000, less with a blown motor
Buy junkyard 5.3L Chevy v8 and 4L60e trans, install it myself: $5000
Buy adapter kit and FJ60 split t-case, rebuild t-case: $2500
Kit out the truck, bumpers, sliders, winch, tires, lift, ect: $7000
Buy some surfboards, fishing gear, collapsible kayak, ect: $5000
Total: $23,500

So I got's $16.5k to travel on! I am headed to Latin America to surf, fish, off-road and live the life of leisure, be gone 4-5 months. Will come home with plenty of cash in my pocket!

Example #2:

Buy clean rust free FJ60, only care about body and interior: $5000, less with blown motor
Buy 80-series rolling chassis: $2000, only care about frame, axles and suspension
Buy junkyard 5.3L Chevy v8 and 4L60e trans, install it myself: $5000
Buy adapter kit for 4L60e to split case and ARB lockers for both diffs: $3000 minus $2k if the 80 axles are already locked
Kit out truck, bumpers, sliders, tires, winch, lift, ect: $8000
Buy some surfboards, fishing gear, collapsible kayak, ect: $5000
Put FJ60 body on FJ80 chassis, install engine and gear boxes. Total: $28,000

So I got's $12k to travel on! I am headed to Latin America to surf, fish, off-road and live the life of leisure, be gone 4-5 months. Won't come home with a lot of cash in my pocket but should have a few grand at least!

Example #3:

Build the truck I already have!
Buy King shocks and related suspension goodies: $4,000
Buy bellhousing and clutch goodies: $1500
Pay for paint, seats and other misc stuff: $5000
Kit out truck, winch, sliders, bumpers, tires: $6000
Buy some surfboards, fishing gear, collapsible kayak, ect: $5000
Build truck, with 80 chassis, FJ60 body + interior, turbo diesel engine, NV4500 5spd and Atlas t-case, blah blah blah: $21,500

So I got's $18.5k to travel on! I am headed to Latin America to surf, fish, off-road and live the life of leisure, be gone 4-5 months. Will come home with plenty of cash in my pocket!

All three examples are about the same $$ wise, ie $20-30k. #3 would be out of the $40k price budget if I didn't already have most of it on hand. All three get me a truck I can't buy, building it myself saves me a ton of money. If paying to have them built, $40k would probably not be enough coin. All three scenarios I got plenty of cash to travel on for some time. All three trucks could be sold for a good chunk of change at some point if required.

Cheers

I work at a junkyard, and if you're paying $5000 for even a complete 5.3/4L60E take-out (ECM, all accessories, cats, etc.), you're getting raped. ;) On the outside, that combo shouldn't be much more than $2000, if even that.

Speaking of junkyard, we just stripped an '04 Suburban. It had been a long time since I was in one and I had forgotten how capacious they were on the inside. I would probably buy an '03-'06 Suburban 2500 4x4 with an 8.1, outfit and lift it. That would be my second choice.

My first choice would be a 45/47 troopy with the camper roof. Spend the first $20,000 buying a nice example and the last $20,000 building the heck out of it. Admittedly, I don't know enough about them to say whether I would keep the original engine/trans or do a swap.

What motor & trans?

Doesnt matter. Stay with factrory set up. For that matter I could just add lift & bumpers to the 04 limited v8 4runner the wife is driving now. Sell my 97 runner and put her in a newer rig and have more money left over for travel.

Fly down to a C.A. country, buy either a 105, 70 series or a LR 110 and simply drive. Hard to keep things simple, too easy to make it complicated.

I am counting all the little junk to install it plus exhaust, shifter linkages, intake and air box, ect ect ect, including consumables to fabricate mounts. :)
