In search...canoe rack ideas/photos

I have 4 Thule cross bars on my truck. 2 of them attach to the shell, and 2 on the cab. I can move them around in any configuration that I want. And when I don't need any of them, the only thing that can be seen are the 4 black mounting brackets on the shell.

I have driven thousands of miles with this setup, all the way from Canada down to Mexico and have zero issues. It is rock solid. I also have 2 bike racks, ski racks, and a home built antenna mount for my racks.

Forgot to add - I initially tried it with just racks on the cap - the curve of the canoe meant that it made contact with the front of the cab, unless it was raked way back on the bars. You'd need risers or something if you wanted to go that route, I think.

Why not a lumber rack? I have hauled my 14' fishing boat on my "over the shell" lumber rack

Canoe Rack

I added a roof basket to my camper shell. Its high enough for the canoe to clear the cab, but low enought to still fit in a 7ft garage door. Canoe off, of course.

Just the standard yakima racks. I don't recall the numbers or width. The two do just fine if you tie them down with a line running forward to the front of the truck. I have sense added a third bar upfront like Louis' truck, to secure my fly rod tubes to.

This is what I'm thinking, Has anyone seen a canoe mounted on a BajaRack?
I think I would put the basket on the truck Cab and mount the canoe there, try to keep the boat more over the truck and minimize the length hanging off the back.

I got some Yakima racks from EBay that came off a similar truck. This set came with the bars, locks, mount towers and the "mounting feet" specific for the Tacoma 4 door. I also got a set of four mounting points/plates for the cap and the special clip bracket for these mounts for the towers. My end result is that I can mount the pair of Yak bars on the cab, on the cap or split and have one on the cap and one on cab...a range of options.

So far here is the cap setup for a VersaBoard (bout 11' as I recall). Note my Leer cap roof line is about 4" higher than the cab...a bit of headroom and keeps load over the cab very well. With the 16' canoe I will likely use just a rear bar on the Leer cap and one on the Tacoma cab.

Also...the nicest feature and why I hunted for the long bed...fits a cot for sleeping (if your under 6'). "Roll-a-cot" brand with no middle leg where wheel well is. The green container has a 12" loop of nylon web strap pop rivited to the side...allows the strap to be looped over the tiedown slider and prevent sliding around.
