but you want to touch it! if you want to touch it, you;ll want to use it, and take more pictures!!!

the only way canon could counter this is by making a camera that is a quality 70's size "C" breast. a classic breast, not bloated like all the fake ones today. one that every man would just love to fondle one handed.

maybe its a symbol of why im finally in the market.

im looking to buy, because they reached a point in technology where quality has caught up with technical, and they have eclipsed the needs of 99% of shooters, pro or not. from what i can see, a high quality 16mp is all thats needed with the current quality cameras, and software.

if i actually am right, then i can see where lots of people are going to cease flipping every year and stay put for 5+years. they have what they need, and cant justify a 1000 dollar hit for no perceptible IQ improvement.

as a result, the camera sales cycle is now going to mirror what it was from the 70's to the 80's, when people bought SLR's as keepers, and all these companies are going to have a glut capacity. that unused capacity will slaughter profits.

the upside will be models getting cleared this year at cost.

the downside will be technical stagnation, when the companies kill r&d and try to reorganize before death.

since ive been sucking up all the info i can on cameras lately, ive noticed FuJis reluctance to put out an xpro2. they have been saying, and people have been buying the story, that they will not release until they make a technological leap... personally im not buying it. its 2 years, the product is due. you dont interrupt the cycle like that. i looked at japan sales and they arnt anywhere to be seen in the top 20. i dont think they have the cash. i think they are hunkering down. fujinon may **** the bed too, which is a shame, because when looking hard, they really do have a top notch product and top notch customer support. i have found myself pulling for fuji on my sheet, looking for reasons to bypass olys well designed em1 in favor of the xe2. the fuji look is sweet and the lenses rock. the aps-c is probably the sweet spot for sensor size attributes, not 4/3.

i wonder if oly and sony are in the best long position right now. below commercial medium format the future seems to be mirror less, and cannon and nikon have pulled a US automakers move, and stuck with the old body on frame, carburated v8 DSLRs. (but man, that Df is one sexy babe)

it's nikon's final attempt at a "smash hit", before the proverbial nail on the coffin...

Nikon be done..

Every camera company is facing the same fate, difference with Canon and Nikon is market share....together they own about 65-70% of the market...that and they're still making money. Same can't be said for most of the others.

As for sales of the DF, despite what nikon rumours thinks the DF is doing better than Nikon had expected as per nikon. Stock for the DF is low across north america. Not surprising as they targeted it as a niche product. A low volume high margin item.

whether or not one of these companies is done, is dependent on the other imaging businesses they dabble in. look at leica medical. cameras arnt even a piss drop in the bucket to them. you have to look at what they are all into. cameras may have just been legacy icing on the cake at this point.

Canon, Sony has tremendous reach in the professional broadcast area. They have revenue to keep the lame digital camera division going.

Nikon is a one trick pony by comparison.. their demise is imminent at the current pace.

if thats the case, i bet a few hours research would turn up 1/2 dozen companies where they would make a good fit as a division. that brand is way too recognized.

A pro concert photographer buddy of mine was telling me about the Df a couple months ago. I like it. If I was spending that kind of coin I would think about switching over to Nikon seeing I don't have that much invested into glass yet. Not in my budget for a while though.

Nikon makes the majority of their money in the stepper motor business which is used in semiconductor conductor manufacturing. Nikon is the 2nd largest manufacture of these stepper motors. Cameras for consumers are just a tiny portion of their business.
